Cole Warneki is a game developer from Seattle, Washington who has been working his way through the ranks of Digital Dreamers, Inc. Lately he hasn't been focused on his latest project and his boss recommends he takes his vacation time. Instead of going to some island resort, Cole decides to do an extreme hunting trip in the wilds of Canada. Cole is in for a surprise when he finds out how extreme his vacation will be. Not only was the plane ride a bit bumpy, but the cabin he will be staying at is in the middle of nowhere. Also the group he is with are some very strange individuals. Expecting a hot meal and some rest, they are attacked by some sort of monster beast that is out for blood.
Along with two other men who seem to know what the monster is, Cole tries to fight it, but it is too strong and ends up killing almost everyone. Cole survives and Gerald, who fought beside him, is on his last breath. He gives Cole a card and a phone, telling him to get in touch with Paige. Gerald dies, and Cole has no choice but to run through the woods for his life because the creature is still out there and has Cole's scent.
Cole is rescued and forced into a world where vampires are Nymars and werewolves are Full Bloods. The creature that attacked Cole in Canada was a Full Blood. Paige is a Skinner. The Skinner group is based out of Chicago. They are guardians that keeps the Nymars in line. But Misonyk, a very powerful Nymar wants to rule over both the Nymars and Full Bloods. It is up to Paige and Cole to stop him before the human race is destroyed.
Marcus Pelegrimas takes an interesting twist on the vampire and werewolf myth in this unique urban fantasy. For a first time writer, Marcus needs a bit more work with his descriptions because they tend to be a bit too clichΓ© in their telling, but overall he has created some appealing characters such as Cole and Paige. You really do feel for Cole, who is a nice guy stuck in a horrible situation. It was also great to see that Paige is a very strong female character who takes down the bad guys very well.
BLOOD BLADE has some funny moments and Cole's reactions to certain situations are realistic. The action scene worked pretty well, even though some come out of nowhere and put both Cole and Paige in danger without any backup. Also, their chemistry as partners needs a bit more work.
BLOOD BLADE should appease those readers who are looking for a new type of urban fantasy with an everyday type of guy like Cole who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Welcome to the nightmare . . .
There is a world you don't know about, inhabited by
supernatural creatures of darknessβvampires, werewolves,
and all manner of savage, impossible beasts that live for
terror and slaughter and blood. They are all around us but
you cannot see them, for knowledge of their presenceβso
close and so hungryβwould surely drive any ordinary human
insane.
But for centuries a special breed of hunter has kept the
monsters at bay, preventing them from breaking through the
increasingly fragile barriers protecting our mortal realm.
These guardians are called skinners.
But beware . . . for there are very few of them left.
