Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-Martin are not
only best friends, but also own a beauty salon in Salt
Lick, Texas. Their salon doubles as a detective agency for
the Domestic Equalizers as they call themselves. They are
a bit famous, or infamous, as amateur detectives, and when
they are asked to make a presentation for the National
Association of Private Investigators in New York City, they
believe that they have finally made the big leagues. The
Domestic Equalizers are ready to take the Big Apple by
storm on their all-expenses paid trip, but Debbie Sue does
have a few qualms. What are a couple of amateur detectives
going to be able to teach professionals? How is she going
to keep Edwina out of trouble?
Edwina is bound and determined to make the most out of this
trip especially trying to find a nice pair of designer
shoes. She makes friends very easily and befriends a
prostitute named Cher. Debbie and Edwina also take a
fellow Texan under their care. Celina is there for the
convention, and she thinks of the Domestic Equalizers as
role models. They simply step in to try and offer support
for Celina who wants to be just like them. Unfortunately,
all the girls end up in the right place at the wrong time.
Who would have thought that they would end up in the middle
of a murder investigation at a private investigators
convention? Will they be able to get themselves out of the
murder business with everyone still intact?
Dixie Cash has spun a fantastically funny mystery. The
Domestic Equalizers are a barrel full of laughs as they go
about their business, and somehow trouble always seems to
land in their way. This was the first book starring Debbie
Sue and Edwina that I have read, and it will certainly not
be my last. I laughed through this book, and was quite
taken with the mystery and mayhem that abounded. DON'T
MAKE ME CHOOSE BETWEEN YOU AND MY SHOES is a wonderful
read, and I think this series will find a way to my keeper
shelf.
New York City is miles from Salt Lick, Texas in more ways
than one, but Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-
Martin are rarin’ to go. The best friends/beauty shop
owners/private-eye partners have been offered an all-
expense paid trip to the National Association of Private
Investigators convention in the Big Apple. Debbie Sue sees
the invitation as validation, but Edwina has one goal: To
get her feet into a pair of super-glam designer shoes, not
easily had back home. Yee-haw!
As a sign of things to come, the two Texas tornados don’t
even get out of the state without causing pandemonium at
the Dallas airport. And once they land in the Big City they
meet Celina, a small-town librarian who’s broke and bereft
after getting robbed, and Cher, an amiable “working girl”
with a heart of gold. Taking them under their wings, the
Domestic Equalizers head right for trouble as Edwina nearly
starts a riot in the hotel bar.
But the Big Apple ain’t seen nothin’ yet! While helping shy
fellow-Texan Celina hook up with a hunky young police
detective, the Domestic Equalizers bumble their way into a
murder investigation that could end up leaving Debbie Sue
deceased and Edwina stone-cold in her new Jimmy Choos!
