Antiquities expert Jem Shaw spends many a lonely day working at the museum her father started, cataloging artifacts he collected on many digs before he died in an explosion. She secretly dedicates her off-time assisting the police with crime scene investigations.

Jem's mother fusses over her, almost controlling Jem's life because she has diabetes and is wasting away.
