Charlotte Court witnessed someone kill her father, murder the hospital nurse, then attempt to murder her. The New York heiress flees for her life, hiding out in hell-hole motels along the way, buying animal antibiotics and medical supplies in farm feed stores to dress her bullet wound. The news media is reporting her as a suspect in the murders of her father and the nurse. Charlotte doesn't know how she did it, but using her maid's passport, SUV, and a pit-stop in Chicago to grab some stashed "mad-money" her aunt left her, Charlotte makes it to Baja California.

Settled into a quiet village in Mexico, Charlotte checks the news back home on a daily basis from an Internet cafe, trying to gauge her safety. She finds solace in painting. While watching the beach across from her rented house, Charlotte sees an injured man hobble to the shore and dive into the water. Sure that the man is in danger, she strains to see him, praying that the ocean will not claim him.

Navy SEAL Matt Sanders has survived Afghanistan, where the enemy riddled his body with bullets and left him in a three- month coma. Now awake, this scarred man has come to Mexico to heal from his war wounds. His body and spirit broken, Matt does not have much to live for. As he walks into the sea, he contemplates letting it take him, until he notices a beautiful woman staring at him and feels her compassion. Day after day, she watches as he makes his way through the sand, exercises and returns from the water. She gives him a reason to live.

One stormy afternoon, Matt swims out to sea. Charlotte is sure he's drowned. She races to the pier to look for him, but it breaks, and the sinking lumber snags Charlotte. Matt saves her life. He sees her bullet wound and knows that someone has tried to kill her. Charlotte has learned not to trust anyone, but Matt breaks through her barriers and promises to keep her safe. Before long, death comes knocking.

PURSUIT moves along quickly. Charlotte and Matt find love only to have death stare them in the face. It makes one think of the way we live our lives, the trails we leave behind and wonder -- if someone really wanted to find us, how easy it might be. This is Elizabeth Jennings' debut suspense novel, and I found it quite interesting.
