In the small town of Moose Creek Junction, Wyoming, Lexie
Lightfoot is trying to start over. She ran off and married
the town bad boy years ago and is now a divorcée with a
college-age daughter. Lexie and her older sister Lucy now
run the Saucy Lucy Café out of their ancestral family home.
Despite having problems making ends meet, Lexie is fairly
content.
But then Lexie begins having trouble keeping her dates
alive. She keeps getting set up by her older sister Lucy,
who believes that being unmarried is a sin. But with the
dates dropping like flies, will Lexie ever get asked out
again? Is it just a coincidence? Is she cursed like some of
the townspeople believe? Or is a sly killer getting away
with murder?
When the killer's attentions turn to Lexie herself, she
doesn't intend to go down without a fight. With her
brother-in-law Sheriff Otis Parnell, a good ol' boy without
any real law enforcement skills, in charge of the case,
Lexie knows she's gotta do something before she's next. With
the help of hunky Detective Gabe Stevenson, on loan from the
nearby Westonville Police Department, Lexie may just live to
see another day. If only she hadn't been just saddled with
her great-aunt Gladys. Aunt Gladys is the family black
sheep, a former Vegas showgirl, with numerous marriages
under her belt.
THE SAUCY LUCY MURDERS is a quirky mystery but a bit
simplistic, imho. Personally, I had a hard time with how
naïve Lexie is. Despite her small-town upbringing, she did
live in California for a number of years and should have
more real-world exposure. Aunt Gladys does provide some
comic relief, but not enough to save this mystery for me.
Readers who favor small-town quaintness should enjoy this
rather cozy mystery from Ms. Reynders.
Dan Lightfoot’s wandering eye has finally gotten the best
of his wife, Lexie.
Bereft, she moves with her teenage daughter, Eva, back to
her hometown, Moose
Creek Junction, Wyoming, to be near her sister Lucy, and
they open a small
business, The Saucy Lucy Café. It sounded like a good idea.
Hometown. Family.
A career and an income…
But Lucy is a staunch, churchgoing woman who believes her
sister must remarry
in order to enter the kingdom of heaven and the reluctant
Lexie finds herself
dating again. Trouble is, all her dates wind up dying and
visiting Stiffwell’s
Funeral Parlor. Gossiping townspeople begin to mistrust the
sisters and café
customers dwindle…along with the men’s townfolk.
Although Detective Gabe Stevenson, with whom Lexie has a
love/hate
relationship, and Lucy’s husband, the inept town sheriff,
Otis Parnell, warn
the sisters not to get involved, Lexie just can’t let
things be. Business is
down the toilet and, according to Lexie, the police simply
aren’t getting the
job done. It’s time to intervene.
And so begins the hilarious and half-baked investigation of
The Saucy Lucy
Murders.
