Mystery Private Eye | Thriller P.I. | Suspense

Tres Navarre returns for a suspenseful thriller on a hurricane engulfed island. He's accompanied by his very pregnant wife and crotchety, colorful older brother on what was supposed to be an impromptu honeymoon for Tres and Maia. Tres had been trying to distance himself from his former danger-filled life of private investigation, and he still mourns the loss of his investigative partner, for which he feels responsible. A vacation and some relaxation are definitely in order for Tres and his new bride.

However, dead bodies begin to pile up and long-forgotten family secrets surface at the old island hotel. Tres finds himself reluctantly thrust, once again, into the role of investigator. As the intensity of the late-season storm increases on Rebel Island, so does Tres' sense of urgency about solving the latest crimes he's stumbled upon. Before the first evening of Tres' honeymoon is over, there are two dead bodies in the hotel, fresh blood in the kitchen and strong indications that there will be more victims before the stranded guests are able to depart the weather-battered hotel for the mainland. Tres scrambles to solve the mystery and protect his fellow guests, including his wife, before the haunting secrets of his past combine with the rage and desperation of a killer into a death sentence for those trapped on the island in the rapidly disintegrating hotel.

Rick Riordan treats the reader to a fast-paced mystery thriller. The lead character, Tres Navarre, continues to endear himself to the reader through his quick- witted and often self-deprecating dialogue. The author provides just enough detail to give depth and color to the characters and the scenes, but not so much as to slow down this quick-moving story. Plot twists are sufficient to keep the reader guessing as to the identity of the killer, without the burden of an overabundance of details. An exciting plot with plenty of suspense and humor make this a great choice for those seeking mystery, thrills and amusing characters, successfully rolled into one fast-paced tale.

SUMMARY

Triple-crown winner of mysteryโ€™s most coveted awardsโ€”the Edgar, the Anthony, and the Shamusโ€”Rick Riordan and his Texas-style take on the crime novel have never been bigger or darker than in this latest Tres Navarre thriller. This time Navarre faces a killer as unstoppable as a force of nature.

Tres Navarre had given up private investigationโ€”and with it a violent past that had buried too many friends. Newly married, with a baby on the way, it was time to find a safer line of work. He and Maia had come to Rebel Island to celebrate their honeymoon and a new future. But no sooner had they arrived than a reminder of the past showed up in the form of a corpse shot dead in room 12.

Just like that Tres finds himself flashing back on the memory of a grim childhood summer spent on the islandโ€”a summer that changed everything in his life. A summer he could never forget but never entirely remember either. And when a second corpse turns up, itโ€™s clear to Tres that the past is not dead and buried after all, but is stalking Rebel Island with unfinished business of its own.

What really happened that long-ago summer, what dark secrets were kept, and who has come back to avenge themโ€ฆthese are the questions Tres, his brother Garrett, and the very pregnant Maia must answerโ€”and time is running out. For a monster hurricane is about to hit Rebel Island, cutting them off from the mainland and leaving them trapped on a flooding island with the hotelโ€™s remaining guests brutally dying one by one. Tres knows better than anyone that the bloodlines of South Texas are as twisted as barbed wire. This time theyโ€™re guarding a revelation that can turn his dreams of happily ever after into the ultimate nightmare.
