Caitlin O'Shaughnessy is hiding out at her stepfather Magnus' house after a recent date that went very bad. She discovers a package he's mailed home for her and wonders at its strange contents, a set of Napier bones and an old manuscript. When Magnus, a world-renowned mathematician, fails to return home and another prominent professor is found dead, Caitlin and her best friend travel to Calix to find out what's going on.
Dominic Fortune has been sent to the U.S. to find a valuable manuscript recently missing from his island nation of Calix. As the crown prince of Calix, he takes his responsibilities seriously. His father is dying of an unknown disease, a curse that's been passed down from generation to generation, and Dominic has begun to show signs of having it himself.
On Calix, Brother Ambrose is desperate to have the Calixian manuscript returned. And he will stop at nothing to make sure it's back on the island.
For Caitlin and Dominic, time is running out to find Magnus alive, as they unravel the shrewd plot to kill them all before they discover the weird circumstances of the life of Hamish MacNeill contained in the manuscript. His is a life that reads more like a fairy tale, but with a deadly twist and immortal repercussions.
Mulvany's story is fast-paced and sexy, with some unusual paranormal elements. A nice read.
