Delilah Gould, a dog trainer and boarder, is the proud owner of The Bed and Biscuit. She is a self appointed crusader for ill and poorly trained dogs. She adamantly speaks her mind in the canine's defense. But there, her outspoken courage ends. She has self esteem issues and suffers anxiety attacks.
Jason Mitchell is from North Dakota and the newest hockey team member of the New York Blades. Finally, the big time! Jason is into the sports star treatment: the celebrity status, the parties, and the night life. It's what he and his twin, Eric, who plays for New Jersey (and a rival team) have always wanted.
Jason is at odds with controlling Stanley, his huge Newfoundland. Stanley is used to free reign and little discipline in the country. Suddenly they are in the big city and domestication is like a foreign language. Eric advised Jason to just leave the dog in Minnesota. No can do. Jason and Stanley are a team. Until there is a game, then what is man and his best friend supposed to do?
Jason's prayers seem answered when he meets Delilah. But Jason is like a little boy who wants all the fun of a new pet, with none of the responsibility. Her cooperation comes at a high price. Jason's not sure his motivation is just for Stanley sake. He is attracted to her. So while Delilah is training Jason and Stanley to survive in the city, Jason is training Delilah to adapt to his world and break from her shell.
Their worlds combust when Delilah relents and attends a party with Jason and his team mates. It doesn't end well, and she feels their relationship is doomed. Although she feels justified, she makes a fool of herself. How will she ever fit into his world, and what makes Jason think his world is the better?
Marcus, Delilah's one employee, quits. Jason offers to help. It doesn't take him long before he gains another level of respect for Delilah.
Eric, Jason's brother, hasn't grown out of his sneaky sibling rivalry. There are game penalties, drunken nights, and broken promises amongst others mishaps that drive a wedge between the men.
How will Jason and Delilah's worlds combine? Jason is into the sport and propaganda. But he wants Delilah, too. So how does a social life style compete when her idea of an exciting evening is literally a walk in the park?
CHASING STANLEY by Deirdre Martin is about two incompatible people with different wants that somehow find each other and make it work. The characters stayed true. There were times that I laughed, and times I got so wrapped into the book that I wanted to yell at Jason's character, "Grow up!" The story was cute and corny, which I love. I'd say this book scores.
