Jack Swyteck, criminal defense lawyer and son of Florida's former governor, has just taken on a new client. Falcon is not a typical client however. Homeless, he somehow manages to post a ten thousand dollar bond for a petty crime and is now out on the streets again. Things begin to get really weird when a woman's body ends up brutally beaten in the trunk of his "home".
Sergeant Vincent Paulo is known as one of the City of Miami Police Department's finest crisis negotiators, but was recently blinded by a hostage situation gone bad. His former girlfriend, Alicia Mendoza, still believes he has it in him to negotiate. Alicia just happens to be a fellow officer, Major Mendoza's daughter, and Falcon's latest obsession.
Theo was no stranger to the legal system, as he was wrongly placed on death's row. Had it not been for Jack, he would have been toast. Now Jack is his best friend. Their plans to have a night out on the town change abruptly when Falcon shows up in the back seat of their car with a gun pointed at Jack's head. Thus, the hostage situation begins. Falcon may have several people held hostage, but the host of characters that are in bondage over the past comes together in a dynamic way. The "disappeared" start appearing in full force and it is up to Paulo, Jack, Theo and Alicia to unravel the mystery to set everyone free.
WHEN DARKNESS FALLS is without a doubt one of the best books I have read in a long time. Mr. Grippando is such an intelligent writer, one who can make characters come alive, situations ignite off the page, and settings that make you crave more. I couldn't put the book down. WHEN DARKNESS FALLS makes you want to read until dawn. Definitely a "five star" read.
Miami criminal defense attorney Jack Swyteck isn't
looking for a new client, at least not one who is homeless
and in jail for threatening to jump off a bridge. But from
the moment Jack is called to defend the man, who goes by the
name Falcon, something is amiss. For one thing, Falcon comes
up with the $10,000 bailβin cash. Then the body of a
brutally murdered woman is found in the trunk of the
abandoned car in which he is living.
Panicked and
on the run, Falcon takes Jack's best friend, Theo, hostage.
They end up barricaded in a motel room, and Theo isn't the
only one at Falcon's mercy. Jack must work with the cops and
their crackerjack negotiator to free Theo and the other
captives before Falcon decides he has nothing to lose by
killing them all.
What Jack doesn't know is that
Falcon has a much bigger agenda, and that there are people
behind the scenes who will stop at nothing to keep their
dangerous secrets. Thus unfolds a riveting, lightning-paced
story, as only James Grippando can tell it.
