Romance | Fantasy

Destiny is neither black nor white. The same manifest manacles that keep one on the path of life, can also be used to free the traveler from other things that would tend to chain and hold them down.

Maura Woodbury thought her service to her country was complete when she found Rath Talward, who was the destined "Waiting King." However, love and desire have chained her heart to his, even as their separate paths have been irrevocably fused into one. Therefore, she finds herself being thrust into legend as more than just a participant. Now she's to fulfill the prophecy as "The Destined Queen."

Through dangerous seas of both water and man, the two lovers must travel to exotic lands in order to find the allies necessary to withstand both their hateful Han overlords and the death mages who wield their terrible powers unchecked. When prophecy gives them their appointed tasks, they find they must rely upon themselves, and the bond forged between them, if they are to have any chance of succeeding against an enemy and answer fate's call. Only love will sustain them through dark times and dark secrets. A love that will feed their magic, even as it casts its spell over both of them on destiny's path.

Hale continues her series started with THE WIZARD'S WARD. Although readers may at times wish they'd read the first book before taking up this second one, the magic of the story carries readers satisfyingly along to the end of the book. Maura and Rath share a sweet, simple, poignant love. Their interaction and imperfect lives lend an enchantment that endears them even more. Action aplenty abounds, sending us on a mystical, magical journey where good versus evil and destinies affect more than just those who follow. This story is sure to please with its own brand of magic. A true treasured tale to enliven those romantics and adventure seekers alike.

SUMMARY

After awakening the "Waiting King" -- the one destined to free her country from the long occupation of the Han -- Maura Woodbury thinks her duty to her country completed. But Maura's task has only just begun. Rath, once a notorious outlaw, has no magic, and thus no power to expel the invaders from their kingdom. Yet the people expect a miracle. And so Maura, still new to using life-magic, is their only hope...

Maura must journey into the unknown, searching for a magical staff -- one that will grant the awakened king one grand wish. But separation from her consort breeds jealousies, devastating secrets and ties to an intimate enemy. Stricken by doubt, Maura and Rath are tempted to ignore the call of fate -- but what will happen to the country if they do?
