Political activist Luz Montoya has made a lot of high-profile enemies in Houston, Texas, including members of the Houston Police Department. She is mugged and severely beaten before being rescued by a good samaritan in a grocery store parking lot. Grant Holcomb, the detective initially assigned to her case, has a personal grudge against Luz. She exposed Grant's ex-partner, John Zeman, as corrupt and sadistic; Zeman was released from HPD, and subsequently committed suicide. Luz demands, and gets, Grant's removal from her investigation.
For some reason Grant can't let go of Luz's case, and even though it might cost him his job, he continues to work behind the scenes. After finding harrowing and gruesome sights in her apartment upon her release from the hospital, Luz is happy to have Grant's protection. Grant is also there when the first of many threatening calls begin. Soon his life is as much in danger as the beautiful Latina he is beginning to care for too much.

Ms. Thompson manages to merge her ensemble of outstanding characters with her innovative storylines, taking the reader for an exhilarating ride on a road filled with twists, turns, and really big surprises.
