Mystery | Suspense

John Corey is a former NYPD homicide detective working for the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force. He's married to Kate Mayfield, who happens to be his boss on one particularly dangerous and personal assignment -- the murder of good friend and fellow FBI Agent Harry Muller. The prime suspect? Bain Maddox, an eccentric oil-tycoon with friends in very high places and a secluded mountain retreat for entertaining guests and hunting.

When Harry goes missing and no one from the CIA, FBI or the state and local police give John and Kate a straight answer, they take matters into their own hands. Harry's murder is staged to look like a hunting accident. Harry and Kate suspect something far more sinister is going on in Bain Maddox's world for him to kill an FBI officer and think he can get away with it. They stitch the clues together to develop a disturbing theory of violence and terror that will change the world forever.

John and Kate are such likable characters. John's corny jokes and sense of humor make the reader think he's just a normal guy doing his job. He is a bit of a government cynic after narrowly living through 9-11. Kate is a strong- willed, intelligent woman who complements John. She gets annoyed with him from time-to-time, endearing her to the reader.

WILD FIRE is an easy and engaging read. DeMille has penned a novel about a government and science that is not above the average reader's head. He also spins a tale that makes the reader wonder about the inner-workings of the U.S. Government and ask, "Could this really happen?" That question alone makes the book hard to put down.

SUMMARY

Welcome to the Custer Hill Club--a men's club set in a luxurious Adirondack hunting lodge whose members include some of America's most powerful business leaders, military men, and government officials. Ostensibly, the club is a place to relax with old friends. But one fall weekend, the club's executive board gathers to talk about the tragedy of 9/11--and finalize a retaliation plan, known only by its codename: Wildfire. That same weekend, a member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is found dead. Soon it's up to Detective John Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield to unravel a terrifying plot that starts with the Custer Hill Club and ends with American cities locked in the crosshairs of a nuclear device. Corey and Mayfield are the only ones who can stop the button from being pushed, and global chaos from being unleashed....
