Hannah Nicks has nothing left to lose. She has already
lost custody of her son, and in her mind that is
everything, so her primary objective is to regain
custody. In order to accomplish that goal, she must have
financial independence. She is trained as an undercover
police officer for the Los Angeles Sheriff's department,
but she gives it up for something that pays more.
With her ability to speak Greek and Arabic and her hope of
financial security, she opts for a career of freelancing
for a privately funded security agency with government
contracts. While on a mission in war torn Iraq, Hannah
discovers something that may lead to a kidnapped American
doctor. She completes her assigned mission, and decides
to risk all to rescue the doctor and collect the million
dollar reward.
After her unauthorized mission, Hannah finds herself
blacklisted from government contracts. These unforeseen
complications lead her back home to Los Angeles. By some
quirk of fate, Hannah glimpses a face in a crowd. A face
that she recognizes from her time in Iraq. A face that
she will never forget. A face that leads her deeper and
deeper into a web of deceit. Will she put a name to the
face? Will she be able to untangle the web in time? Will
she be able to save herself?
Taylor Smith has written a very compelling story of one
woman's struggle to do what is right. The intricacies of
all characters and agencies involved are astounding. SLIM
TO NONE is an exceptional novel. I found the tale
exciting, and the plot fascinating if not a little scary
to think that such things could happen or do happen.
Taylor Smith definitely has her niche in the political
thriller market, and SLIM TO NONE is a book to keep an eye
out for.
When a talented covert-ops specialist driven by a single,
personal purpose interrupts a conspiracy that reaches from
the darkest corners of the Middle East to the upper echelons
of Washington and beyond, her chances of survival are . . .
Slim To None.
After losing custody of her young son,
security specialist Hannah Nicks has one goal: earn enough
money to retire and raise her child. The fastest way to
accomplish that is to take on a covert, privately funded
mission in the Middle East, and in a war fueled more by
money than morality, Hannah is on only one side -- her own.
When the opportunity arises to do a little extra business,
rescuing a kidnapped American doctor and retrieving a
handsome reward, Hannah figures Why not? But when the
mission ends badly, she discovers the price of her risks:
the loss of a young ally, the reward money and her
reputation.
Two years later, Hannah is back in Los
Angeles, no closer to gaining custody, more uncertain of her
fitness as a mother and even less in demand for employment.
But when a chance encounter leads to the man who ruined her
mission in Iraq, Hannah plans to even the score. Now she's
got another shot at unraveling a tangled web of lies and
treachery that, she soon discovers, could drag America to
its knees. Her only ally is a cop who has burned a few too
many bridges himself, a man who understands that the odds
are always better when you have nothing left to lose.
