Fresh Fiction Review

Hippo Eats Dwarf

Non-Fiction

This read, much like candy, is one that is best in small doses. Too much at one sitting leaves you feeling a bit dizzy and unsure if you'll ever want to try it again. A collection of bits and pieces of information, some from printed sources and others from the internet, are all part of the socialogical phenomona that is now known as the urban legend. While some of the stories are familiar - I am a child of the internet age, after all, I found myself laughing or groaning more than once at entertaining way they were delivered. Boese does a nice job of presenting the stories by adding a little more of their history and effect. However, there is more going on here than a bit of fun -- this is a a field guide in a very real sense. Just as Marliln Perkins might have used a handy reference guide to tell different snake species apart while on safari, the modern day internet adventurer needs to have some help as they stumble across different bits of lore. This book provides some of the tools to help the less experienced inter-naut stay safe. It gives them the tools to recognize some of the more common hoaxes that float around on the internet and in society in general. This one is easy to recommend and enjoy - hopefully it will give a few more folks the ability to filter their e-mails and not forward yet another load of Spam to my inbox. Please people - read and learn!

Hippo Eats Dwarf is the essential field guide to today's Misinformation Age. Whether you're deciphering political doublespeak or trying to decide whether to forward that virus warning, hoaxpert Alex Boese provides the guidelines you need. For instance, Reality Rule 6.1: Just because you read it on the Internet doesn't make it true.
