José María Aznar
José María Aznar, Prime Minister of the Spanish government
between 1996 and 2004, began his political career as a tax
inspector and was elected to the Congress of Deputies in
1982. From 1987-1989, he was appointed President of the
Council of Castile and Leon, after which he became head of
the Popular Party (PP). He has also been President of the
Centrist Democrat International.
In 2003, Aznar decided not to run again for the presidency
of his party and his counry. He has since accpeted a
position as Distinguished Scholar at Georgetown University.
Aznar is married and has three children.
