Who can say what drives a person to write? All I know is
that one rainy spring day in 1997, after years as an avid
reader of fiction from many genres, I was compelled to put
my own words to paper--or to computer screen, at least.
With that first stroke of a keyboard, my life irrevocably
changed.
The writing life has led me to some of the best friends
I've ever known. As a writer, I've gone places and done
things I would never have otherwise gone or done. And I've
learned a lot about myself by writing about my characters.
Sure, I have a lot less free time now than I used to. But I
wouldn't change a thing. Being a writer isn't always easy,
but it is satisfying. Especially since I'm able to combine
it with so many other things I enjoy: my small ranch in
Texas, raising American Quarter Horses, and volunteering
with the Animal Rescue League to find loving homes for
abandoned and abused pets.
Whether reading them or writing them, books have always
been an integral part of my life. I love books that inspire
and books that inform. Books that intrigue and books that
inflame. But in my opinion the best books of all...simply
entertain.
