A woman finding her own voice is a subject near and dear to my heart. I was definitely a late bloomer, but the good news is that it's never too late to say what you need to say. I had been through a divorce and after indulging my malaise for an indecent amount of time, I decided to get off my bum and do something about it. Writing had always been a passion and I realized that I was going to have to write my way out of that dark place - and so that's what I did. I thought 'What good is a lousy divorce if you can't create something fun out of it?' There must be other women like me out there who are struggling and could use a few laughs. Why not write something they perhaps can relate to? I used my life as a jumping off point and created a world of fictional characters inspired by the muses that are everywhere in Los Angeles. When people hear you're writing a book about dating debacles, they are only too happy to contribute tales from the battlefields. I had many friends and even random strangers tell me their tidbits and into the creative pot they all went and marinated for a very long time. The funny thing is that once I began writing these stories, my life started to change in wonderful ways. Those early efforts became my first novel, Synchronized Breathing. I started work on the book eight years ago and it went through many, many revisions and I turned it upside down and on its head before I was ready to share it. At times I tried not to write it and left it alone for months but I'd always be drawn back. Now it's finally time to share it with the women out there that I wrote it for. Synchronized Breathing is a humorous take on dating after divorce. It examines unconventional mother/daughter relationships and also what it means to tackle love and motherhood when it isn't turning out the way you'd envisioned. (Warning: it has my racy Australian sense of humor, so if you have delicate sensibilities, this may not be the book for you!) Thank you and I hope you enjoy Synchronized Breathing! Tara Ellison was born in London but raised in Sydney and Hong Kong before coming to the US. Tara lives in Los Angeles and has since remarried. Synchronized Breathing is her first book.
