He became a flight instructor and taught flying while a senior in high school. A native Texan, Norris attended the University of Houston and was hired as a pilot by Delta Airlines in 1962.
During his thirty-four year career with the airline Norris crossed both the North Pole and the Equator on numerous occasions and compiled almost five hundred crossings of the Atlantic and Pacific combined. He served a two-year term as chairman of the Delta division of the Airline Pilots Association. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s Aircraft Accident Investigation School and has published technical articles (aviation) in local and national magazines.
After his children were grown, Norris and his wife sailed their forty-five-foot sailboat to many of the popular Caribbean destinations. He is presently serving as vice president of the association.
