Rebecca Rogers Maher has spent lots of good years working for nonprofits, teaching, writing curriculum, and caring for two beautiful children. In order to fulfill a childhood promise to herself, she stole a few hours a week from a hectic schedule to write a novel. Over the course of many, many weeks, she built the story of her first book, I’ll Become the Sea. Rebecca reads classic novels, poetry, fiction and nonfiction stories about the apocalypse, academic texts about race, class, gender and the environment, and romance novels. That last one, like her lifelong devotion to heavy metal, is a source of great confusion to most of her friends. What she knows – and thinks you might know too – is that melodrama is an antidote to numbness, a way to take complex ideas and set them on fire so that everyone can see them, and a hell of a lot of fun.
