Noah Scalin

Noah Scalin

Founder/Graphic DesignerALR Design When you think about the job of a graphic designer, you may not think about activism, but for Noah Scalin it was a given. He started a socially conscious design firm called ALR (Another Limited Rebellion) Design, which offers affordable graphic design using environmentally friendly products. Scalin grew up in an activist household and has marched in protests since childhood, so it was important to synthesize a career in graphic design with his beliefs. β€œI was raised to speak out if there was something I felt was wrong,” he says. In the design ethics class he developed and teaches at Virginia Commonwealth University, he tries to show that β€œyou don’t have to sacrifice what you believe in to make a living.” Scalin also serves as chairman of the board of directors for the Richmond Peace Education Center, started SPROUT, a community-supported agriculture group and co-created a traveling art exhibit called β€œSwords into Plowshares” to draw attention to gun violence in Richmond.
