His books have been shortlisted three times for predecessors to the Royal Society Prizes for Science Books Junior Prize. In 1993, How the Earth Works' and in 1997, 'What Happens When?' were shortlisted for the Rhone-Poulenc Prizes for Science Books Junior Prize.
