Zo Newell

Zo Newell earned her Master’s of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School in 1988, with a focus on religions of the world. She began her study of yoga at age 14, with neurosurgeon/psychiatrist Rammurti S. Mishra, M.D. at Ananda Ashram in New York State. In Nashville, she created the Yoga Education Society and co-founded the Southern Institute of Yoga Studies with Betty Larsen and John Charping. She is certified at the 1,000 hour level as an experienced (ERYT) yoga instructor, a member of Yoga Alliance since 1999, and the first certified Relax and Renew trainer in Tennessee. Zo provided the yoga component of the pain management program at Baptist Hospital’s Mind/Body Institute. She developed the yoga curriculum for breast cancer survivors for Baptist’s Healing through Movement project. She currently teaches mainly therapeutic and restorative classes in Nashville, offers workshops on pranayama and yoga philosophy, and she is currently working on a book on mythology and asana. She offers individualized instruction by appointment and maintains a small counseling practice.
