Philip Gold
In the spring of 2002, Philip Gold became one of America’s first conservatives to oppose the upcoming Iraq war and the Bush/neocon agenda. His stance led to his departure from Discovery Institute, a prominent conservative think tank, where he held the position of Senior Fellow in National Security Affairs. He then broke entirely with conservatism after nearly forty years in the movement, a story told in his 2004 book, Take Back the Right (Avalon/Carroll & Graf).
Philip is the author of six books and over 800 articles, columns and reviews. His new book, The Coming Draft: The Crisis in Our Military and Why Selective Service Is Wrong, will be published by Random House/Presidio in Fall 2006. He is finishing his first novel, a Washington, DC Marine Corps political thriller feminist love story entitled, A Change of Command. He is also co-authoring Refusal to Treat: The Real Crisis in American Medicine with Dr. Michael Glueck, a retired radiologist and nationally respected journalist and medical affairs commentator.
Philip grew up in Pittsburgh. He received his B.A. in History from Yale University, then joined the Marines. He served eleven years, active and reserve, retiring as a major with a primary specialty in intelligence. He received his Ph.D. in History from Georgetown University, where he taught for fourteen years.
In addition to his academic work, Philip has been a syndicated columnist (PRS); a staff writer for Insight on the News, covering national defense, advertising, and psychiatry; and a fellow in three think tanks. He writes a regular column, “In Re,” for Washington Law & Politics and is a chronic contributor to various Seattle publications.
Philip lives in the Seattle area with his partner in all things, writer Erin Solaro.
