J. P. Donleavy

J.P. Donleavy was born in New York City in 1926 and immigrated to Ireland following World War II. He is the author of eleven novels including The Ginger Man; A Singular Man; The Saddest Summer of Samuel S.; The Beastly Beatitudes of Balthazar B.; The Onion Eaters; A Fairy Tale of New York; The Destinies of Darcy Dancy, Gentleman; London Adventures of Schultz; Leila; Are You Listening Rabbi Low, ; That Darcy, That Dancer, That Gentleman; and The Lady Who Liked Clean Restrooms. He has also written several plays, including The Ginger Man; Fairy Tale of New York; A Singular Man; The Saddest Summer of Samuel B.; and The Beastly Beatitudes of Balthazar B. He has published three works of non-fiction, The Unexpurgated Code: A Complete Manual of Survival & Manners; De Alphonse Tennis: The Superlative Game of Eccentric Champions; J.P.Donleavy's Ireland: In All Her Sins and Some of Her Graces A Singular Country; and a collection of short stories, Meet My Maker the Mad Molecule. His autobiography,The History of the Ginger Man, appeared in 1994. He is now an Irish citizen and lives in Westmeath.
