Fresh Fiction Review

Girls' Night Out

Thriller Psychological

For over twenty years, Ashley, Natalie and Lauren were the best of friends, even sharing a company together. However, their friendship has fractured, and as a last ditch effort, Ashley invites Natalie and Lauren to Mexico to patch it up. Each has their own reasons as well as secrets in accepting the invite, but what will happen when one of them vanishes into thin air?

I have recently developed a taste for suspense/thriller fiction, in particular the psychology that plays out with either death or disappearance; how it breaks relationships and makes people evaluate themselves and those they know. I expected a lot from GIRLS' NIGHT OUT by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke, especially with a tantalizing summary of not knowing what happened and the reasons for it happening.

I loved are the mystery behind what happened to Ashley, especially when the authors threw some unexpected red herrings which kept me turning pages and trying to piece the story together. Figuring out the mystery is the fun part of the story, especially towards the end when there are more questions than answers. The relationship dynamic between the friends is well done and its obvious that the authors have experiences with dealing with life-long friendships.

While there are a lot of good things about GIRLS' NIGHT OUT by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke, it did have some issues, namely that the three women weren't too well- developed, and a lot of time is spent telling the reader about Ashley being charismatic and the glue of the friendship rather than seeing that side of her personality. I also found that the male suspect was also thinly drawn.

Still, for a reader who loves thrillers where nothing is at it seems, as well as the enduring bonds of long friendships, GIRLS' NIGHT OUT by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke should be a good late summer read.

SUMMARY

From the bestselling authors of The Good Widow comes a chilling novel of psychological suspense that will make you think twice about what your best friend may be hiding…

For estranged friends Ashley, Natalie, and Lauren, it’s time to heal the old wounds between them. Where better to repair those severed ties than on a girls’ getaway to the beautiful paradise of Tulum, Mexico? But even after they’re reunited, no one is being completely honest about the past or the secrets they’re hiding. When Ashley disappears on their girls’ night out, Natalie and Lauren have to try to piece together their hazy memories to figure out what could have happened to her, while also reconciling their feelings of guilt over their last moments together.

Was Ashley with the man she’d met only days before? Did she pack up and leave? Was she kidnapped? Or worse—could Natalie or Lauren have snapped under the weight of her own lies?

As the clock ticks, hour by hour, Natalie and Lauren’s search rushes headlong into growing suspicion and dread. Maybe their secrets run deeper and more dangerous than one of them is willing—or too afraid—to admit.
