DARK RIVER RISING by Roger Johns is a mystery thriller set in
the bayous of Louisiana. The perfect background for mystery and
the unknown. This thrilling first novel takes you deep into the
back woods with the Baton Rouge Police Department and Detective
Hartman. Johns is a gifted writer and it shows within the pages
of this captivating police procedural. There are many elements
at play deep within the written words has you experience
suspenseful action and steamy romance that takes place in the
middle of an unsolved murder case. A budding romance heats up
between the Baton Rouge Police Detective and the Federal Agent
who are in the midst of investigating this gruesome murder. DARK RIVER RISING is the perfect read for fans of mystery
thrillers with a well plotted theme and loads of suspense. You
will be on the edge of your seat as you read each suspenseful
page never knowing what lies ahead around the next corner. Page
after page is filled with the thrilling and intriguing mystery
of who done it and why. Detective Wallace is a tough character
with a tender side and a painful past but smart enough to not
let emotions stand in the way. The instant chemistry heats up
when she is paired to work a case with the handsome Federal
Agent Cunningham. Together they must solve a murder that
involves a drug dealer and a government scientist. You will get
lost in a world of office politics and competing jurisdictions
as you follow them along with the investigation. The plot
thickens when what they uncover puts their life in danger
creating the perfect twist to this intriguing thriller. Johns
has written a compelling first book in this series. I am
looking forward to reading more adventures from these
characters as they develop more with each novel.
SUMMARY
Dark River Rising is a tense and expertly-plotted mystery
set against the bayous of Louisiana, from debut author Roger
Johns. Baton Rouge Police Detective Wallace Hartman has had better
days. With her long-time partner and mentor on medical leave
and a personal life in shambles, she’s called to the scene
of a particularly gruesome murder: the body of a known
criminal has been found in a deserted warehouse, a snake
sewn into his belly. Obvious signs of torture point to a
cunning and cold-blooded killer who will stop at nothing to
find what he’s looking for. When Federal Agent Mason Cunningham arrives on the scene,
Wallace expects a hostile takeover of the case. But when a
scientist with ties to the victim goes missing from a
government lab, she needs Mason’s federal connections as
much as he needs her local insight, and the two form an
uneasy partnership to solve a case that grows more
complicated—and dangerous—by the minute. Meanwhile, the killer lurks in the shadows with an agenda no
one saw coming, and when Wallace and Mason threaten to get
in the way they risk losing everything they hold dear.
