Every once in a while I'm approached with a request to review
something that doesn't quite fit any of my usual genres. I do
reviews on many arts and crafts and hobby topics but this
recent
request made me really put on my thinking cap. Dover
Publications added ROMEO & JULIET PAPER DOLLS illustrated
by Eileen Rudisill Miller to their expansive list. The books
pages
are good quality glossy paper which showcases the designs just
beautifully. Each page contains a William Shakespeare quote
from Romeo & Juliet which is such a wonderful romantic tragedy.
For many Romeo & Juliet is probably their favorite work by
Shakespeare so it seems fitting to publish a colorful workbook
filled with paper doll figures and assorted garments for each.
Included are of course Romeo and Juliet. They are joined with
Friar Laurence and Nurse. And each character has several
outfits
to cut out if you choose to perform this story. ROMEO & JULIET
PAPER DOLLS cover provides the perfect stage setting.
But here's where I wonder. This is a beautiful book and would
certainly be welcome by any Shakespeare fan. Lovely to look
through and of course the characters and outfits are sturdy
enough for play. I just don't know that I would. But I can
definitely
see this book as a great teaching tool. What a lovely way to
get
students introduced to William Shakespeare. A young student
learning Shakespeare would enjoy acting out scenes with dialog
from the story. Anything that gets children reading has value.
So if you are looking for something with the Shakespeare theme
take a peek at ROMEO & JULIET PAPER DOLLS by Eileen
Rudisill Miller. I know you will love the quality of the
book and the
beauty of the illustrations. And perhaps enjoy reminiscing
with the
quotes that certainly conjure up memories of the book.
A vivid new paper doll collection pays tribute to the
legendary star-crossed lovers
Shakespeare enthusiasts, paper doll collectors, and
romantics will prize this charming homage to the Bard's
famous sweethearts. Four dolls depict ardent Romeo, lovely
Juliet, sympathetic Friar Laurence, and Juliet's jolly
Nurse. Their wardrobe, consisting of 24 colorful and
authentic Renaissance costumes plus accessories, is
accompanied by quotations from the immortal play. In
addition, the book's inside covers offer the perfect
background: a rose-covered balcony.
