Siobhan Quinn, known only as Quinn, is adjusting to her life
as a vampire/werewolf hybrid. She continues to work for Mr.
B, her mysterious boss, but he has a new task for her that
is about to involve her in the midst of supernatural
politics and vendettas that have gone on for years. What
side will Quinn choose when her search for a missing
necromancer turns into something far more deadly? Will the
quest for the missing magic totem finally destroy Quinn?
RED DELICIOUS is the second book in the Siobhan Quinn
series and can easily be read as a standalone. Kathleen
Tierney (who is Caitlin R. Kiernan) provides readers with
enough of a recap of the main points of the first book,
Blood Oranges, so one can easily jump right into this
series.
Kathleen Tierney has an intriguing idea with RED DELICIOUS.
In essence, she's poking fun at a lot of the urban fantasy
conventions and setting the stereotypes on their proverbial
heads. The writing style itself is quite unconventional,
with the main character directly addressing the reader
and even provides an odd interlude in the midst of the
story.
Kathleen Tierney provides a clear warning upfront to readers
that RED DELICIOUS is going to break supernatural
stereotypes and will offend some readers. Normally, I'm not
easily offended and I like the idea of an urban fantasy
spoof (of sorts), but the bawdy humor seems somewhat over
the top. Quinn is just a bit too scattered, too foulmouthed,
and the plot just a tad too raunchy for me to connect with
her. Readers who want their urban fantasy dark, gritty, and
are willing to set aside all conventions might enjoy RED
DELICIOUS.
Meet Siobhan Quinn--half werewolf, half vampire, and
completely screwed. After successfully transitioning from
being a notorious junkie demon hunter into a notorious
werepire hit man, she's become a full-fledged member of the
world of horrors. But her initiation into the underbelly of
supernatural society hasn't earned her any friends. Not
only is she being hounded by a former priest with a vendetta
against the undead, but her boss, Mr. B, has no qualms about
sending her on missions pretty much guaranteed to end her
life...again.
When the daughter of a prominent Rhode Island necromancer
goes missing, Quinn is given the thankless job of tracking
her down before her father finds out and raises (literal)
hell. The only problem is that the girl is caught up in
something much bigger than a simple vanishing act. Something
related to an ancient magical totem so powerful a host of
distinctly unsavory folks in three dimensions would kill to
get their hands on it. And Quinn's the lucky monster caught
in the cross fire.
