The Tethering estate is more than Felicity Wilcox's family
home. It is an emotional tie to her mother. Together the
two of them planted and cared for the orchard that makes
Tethering profitable. Now her Uncle Jonathon has gone and
lost the estate in a game of cards to some reprehensible
gambler. Felicity won't lose Tethering. She plans to do
whatever it takes to scare away the new owner. She just
didn't count on him being so deliciously attractive and
nice. Mr. James Collington needs a quick sale of Tethering
to fulfill a debt and regain his ancestral estates. He
didn't count on the feisty Felicity or the charm of
Tethering. Despite his growing attraction to Felicity,
James is a gentlemen. He has no choice but to honor his
promise. If only he could maneuver Miss Wilcox into seeing
his side, James knows that the two of them could have
something special.
A LITTLE NIGHT MISCHIEF by Emily Greenwood is a delight.
Felicity's mischievous pranks on James create a humorous
and light-hearted opening that reveals the character's
natures. The light-hearted opening is a wonderful contrast
to the deeply emotional climax. Felicity's character
growth, in particular, is beautifully written and feels
natural. She doesn't change who she is but she simply grows
into a more complex and wiser person. James' growth is
slower than Felicity's and there were two moments when I
actively disliked him. James is an organized, take-charge
type of character. He's goal-oriented and once he sets
plans in motion, he uses whatever he can to maneuver events
and people into doing what he wants. I'm actually a little
like this, so it's a personality type that I can
understand. Ms. Greenwood doesn't shy away from revealing
those deep-seated characteristics that make people
unlikable. It's essential to James' character to recognize
this tendency of his to push people into doing his will
without giving thought to their emotional needs. This
creates those unbelievably heart-breaking scenes where the
reader is deeply attached to Felicity at the same moment we
want to boot James in the behind. This is really hard to
pull off well as a writer and Ms. Greenwood does it well.
A LITTLE NIGHT MISCHIEF excels at creating dynamic
characters who no matter their flaws are engaging and
compelling. Even secondary characters feel well-rounded and
complex. The Viscount Roxham, Hal, is a dashing rogue and
while this is a much used character type, it is one of my
favorites. I can't wait to see if Ms. Greenwood will give
Hal his own story.
Emily Greenwood's debut novel A LITTLE NIGHT MISCHIEF is
fast-paced, delightful romance that strips away the
material desires to reveal what is truly important in life;
love. I can't wait to see how her writing and characters
develop. She's certainly an author to watch.
Regency romance author Emily Greenwood makes a strong debut with a playful series about young ladies who discover that a little mischief can be a good thing! When Miss Felicity Wilcox's uncle gambles away the estate, she decides to disguise herself as a ghost to rid her home of the handsome new owner. Except James Collington doesn't scare easily, and haunting his nights is turning out to be far more amusing mischief than she ever would have guessed. With everything to lose, these two adversaries can't allow their hearts to rule—or can they?
