In ALICE IN ZOMBIELAND, there is a delightful mix of
humor, tragedy, action, grisly horror, and teen angst with
some intense sex appeal thrown in. This is the first in a
new teen urban fantasy by veteran paranormal romance author
Gena Showalter. The series is entitled The White Rabbit
Chronicles and as you read through the book you will
understand why. Alice Bell is not your typical teenage
girl. When you begin reading, you already feel as if Alice
had to grow up faster than others and that she often had to
take on the parenting role in her family. After the first
couple of chapters, Alice has the weight of the world on her
shoulders. She lives with her paranoid father who doesn't
allow his family to venture out at night, in order to
protect them from the monsters he sees among the shadows.
Alice has always thought her dad was crazy because she had
never seen said monsters. On her sixteenth birthday, Alice
convinces her father to allow the family to go to her
younger sister's dance recital. This is a decision that
Alice will come to regret, as a heart-breaking tragedy
occurs that will spin her into a terrifying world of
zombies, bloodshed, and gut-wrenching loss.
As you can muster from the title, there are zombies in
this book. But these are not just your average, rotting
corpses hungering for brains. Gena Showalter has created a
unique concept that I have not read before. This is not just
a good book with a unique storyline, but one in which I
laughed out loud, cried on the pages, and felt short of
breath during the romantic scenes. Yes, this is a teen
urban fantasy, but I didn't feel as if I was reading a teen
fictional novel at all. Gena Showalter has a knack for
creating extremely likeable characters and this book is no
exception. Along the way, we are introduced to the people in
Alice's universe. There is the new best friend Kat, who is
a smart-mouthed, self-confident, and extremely loyal from
the start. No one could ask for a better friend than Kat.
Then we meet the drool-worthy Cole, who Alice instantly
connects with from the moment their eyes meet. Again,
Showalter does such a great job with characterization that
you forget this guy is supposedly under the age of eighteen.
He seems like an old soul and ALL man. A warrior, who
Showalter time and time again, proves she excels at
creating. All of the secondary characters enrich this story
and you never feel as if someone is dispensable.
Alice joins Cole and his team of fighters, who are tasked
with battling the zombies in an effort to win the age-old
war of Good against Evil. As someone who enjoys a female
lead that is kick-ass, I was not disappointed! ALICE IN
ZOMBIELAND is a slice of pure fictional deliciousness!
Every bite (page) is filled with snarky wit, belly-shaking
laughter, salty tears, pulse-racing action, and the kind of
romance that sets your blood on fire!
She won't rest until she's sent every walking corpse back to
its grave.
Forever.
Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change
course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have
laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined?
Please. But that's all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a
breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was
gone.
Her father was right. The monsters are real.
To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To
survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad
boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if
Ali isn't careful, those secrets might just prove to be more
dangerous than the zombies.
