Accountant Allie Whitman leads a secret life, one that is
lucrative but potentially dangerous. Working with attorney
Connor Norman, she operates as a corporate whistle-blower,
uncovering financial fraud in companies with government
contracts. Allie uncovers one fraud for which the
perpetrators are willing to do anything to keep their
misdeeds hidden, up to and including making witnesses
disappear. Can Allie, who has secrets even Norman doesn't
know about, blow the whistle on this latest company's
secrets while protecting her own?
Right from the beginning, there's a lot going on. It almost
felt like too much. But once all the pieces are laid out
and the puzzle starts coming together, WHEN THE DEVIL
WHISTLES is a page-turning read. Rick Acker, a real-life
deputy attorney general specializing in fraud, does a great
job building up the suspense, revealing the damning
evidence (and the danger to Allie) bit by bit. The
relationship between Allie and Connor is multi-layered, very
much business but with hints of romance and flashes of
faith, adding yet another level of suspense to an already
taut tale. The prose is not stellar but certainly
serviceable, resulting in a likable addition to the
Christian suspense genre.
“I didn’t have a choice. I didn’t.” That’s what Allie
Whitman tells herself every night as she lies awake.
Sometimes she even believes it. But mostly she knows deep
down that her inability to make a hard choice has put
millions of lives at risk, including her own. Now the only
one who can help her is her lawyer, Connor Norman.
Unfortunately, Allie’s actions have destroyed Connor’s
trust in her—and may destroy much, much more.
