Mystery | Romance Suspense

Keira Sullivan, a successful illustrator and folklorist, arrives in Ireland to research the history of an old folk tale involving fairies and a stone angel. It will also give her a chance to look into her own Irish background, which her mother refuses to disclose. Thirty years prior, her mother visited Ireland and became pregnant. She never revealed what happened and took refuge in her religion.

Keira traipses through the Irish hills soaking in the scenery. As she explores a dilapidated stone hut, its walls tumble down, trapping her in darkness. Keira swears that just before the hut collapsed, she saw the mythical stone angel. Refusing to succumb to panic, she works to find a way out.

When Keira does not contact her uncle, a Boston police investigator, he calls in a favor and sends Simon Cahill to locate Keira. Simon, an undercover FBI agent, works as a volunteer for an emergency search and rescue team. He reaches Keira just as she is freeing herself from the debris. Feeling an instant connection, they ignore it as they search for the angel that's now missing.

Returning to Boston, Keira and Simon are drawn into a murder investigation that involves the angel. When another homicide occurs, it becomes apparent it has ties to a savage murder that happened 30 years ago. Untangling the secrets becomes imperative, as it's evident the killer has a mission.

The suspense builds as Ms. Neggers takes readers on a labyrinth of puzzle pieces that slowly intertwine. The complex plot is enhanced with fascinating characters that tell half-truths in an attempt to keep their long-held secrets. Ms. Neggers adds to the plot's richness by catching the Irish spirit with her tales of fairies and folklore.

SUMMARY

On a remote stretch of the rugged coast of Ireland, folklorist and illustrator Keira Sullivan pursues the mysterious Irish legend of an ancient Celtic stone angel. As she searches an isolated ruin, Keira discovers what she thinks is the mythic angel, but before she can examine her find, she senses a malevolent presence just as the ruin collapses, trapping her inside.

Keira’s uncle is a Boston homicide detective who enlists the help of Simon Cahill to find his missing niece. An expert with Fast Rescue, a rapid-response search-and-rescue organization, Simon doubts the existence of the relic, but rushes to Ireland to free Keira, despite his need to keep a low profile after assisting in the takedown of a major criminal network.

But the gruesome evidence of a startling act of violence convinces Simon that whatever Keira found in the ruin, the danger she faces is real. When the violence follows them to Boston—and escalates—Simon and Keira realize that the long- forgotten story of the mythic angel that has captivated her has also aroused a killer . . . a calculating predator who will certainly kill again.
