In the mercurial climate of the Hollywood movie industry, paupers can become princesses in the blink of an eye, while the power brokers of today can become the unemployable castoffs of tomorrow with one box office failure. Within the adversarial confines of this highly competitive and creative field, four women have managed to hold onto one of the rarest commodities in town -- true friendship.
Celeste Solange is the most sought after actress in Hollywood. Coming off a two year hiatus and recently married to Damian Bruckner, one of the industry's top producers, Celeste is poised to take on the world with a starring role in Damian's latest movie. But her dreams of a "happily ever after" disintegrate on the morning she learns that her husband is having an affaire with a young starlet while on location in New Zealand, and that the starlet is replacing Celeste as the lead in Damian's movie.
Lydia Albright, Hollywood producer extraordinaire, is one false step away from losing everything. The star of her latest movie is in jail, her director is AWOL, and the studio she works for, Worldwide Pictures, has just been handed over to her arch nemesis, Arnold Murphy, a small-minded man with a Napoleon complex who would like nothing better than to shelve Lydia's movie for good and ruin her career.
Jessica Caulfield is the president of CTA, the most prestigious talent agency in Hollywood, which often makes her the target of underhanded maneuvers by rival agents intent on stealing her best clients. That's a price Jessica is willing to pay in exchange for the privilege of being on top, but when the owner of CTA informs her that he will be adding a new agent as her co-president, an agent whom Jessica suspects to be a master manipulator and fraud, she knows the foundation on which she stands is in grave danger of crumbling.
Mary Anne Meyers arrived in Hollywood from Minnesota with almost nothing and now, nine years later, she fears that she's going to leave exactly the same way until the day she receives "the call" from Lydia Albright, asking Mary Anne to do a rewrite on the script for Lydia's latest movie. Suddenly, Mary Anne is thrust into the heart of the Hollywood industry where she discovers that in this business, there is no black and white, only gray, and that the good guys don't always win.
But in a town where perception is often more important than fact, these women have a few tricks of their own, especially with their friendship as the ultimate secret weapon. While impending failure stalks them at every turn, these four friends work together to find the strength, courage and resources necessary to battle those who wish to bring them down.
HOLLYWOOD GIRLS CLUB is a delightful treat full of charm, wit, and heart. Maggie Marr speaks with the sincerity of someone who has witnessed the best and worst that Hollywood has to offer and has lived to tell the tale. Celeste, Lydia, Jessica and Mary Anne are dynamite heroines with very human quirks and issues, but also a warmth and strength which makes you want to know them better. So open the door to a world few of us ever see, and lose yourself in the magic and intrigue that is Hollywood.
