Contemporary Women's Fiction

At age 20, ex-college student Eve finds herself married with her first child, having been groomed into the perfect wife and mother, living the lavish lifestyle she always wanted. At 26, Eve has two children and a third one on the way. She thinks her life is perfect until the awful day she starts to miscarry and can't reach her workaholic husband, Dennis. When he finally shows up, he informs her that his business is going under and they'll lose everything they own. Dennis then abandons them, and they don't hear from him for years.

At age 32, Eve meets a 22-year-old college student named Joseph. Even though he's much younger, he's just what she needs. He makes her laugh and feel again, and Eve soon becomes pregnant. She couldn't ask for a better father for her children than Joseph, but his ambition with his new job scares her and makes her think of her past life with Dennis. Then the pressure for marriage begins along with the fighting. Joseph eventually moves out, but not without the gift of yet another child.

After three years, Eve is unable to let Joseph go from her heart and wants him back. But he announces his engagement, and Eve tries to convince herself that she can let him go. Eventually, Joseph realizes he's homesick and wants his family back. Now, he has to try and convince Eve to let him come home.

This is a heart-wrenching story. You follow the years of Eve's life, falling in love with the ones she loves and hating the ex. I also liked that the story takes place in modern-day London and enjoyed some of the language differences.

SUMMARY

It's all about Eve.

At least, it should be -- after divorce with Dennis and being jilted by Joseph, Eve could use a little "me" time. Yoga and tending her tiny organic garden keep her centered, but life's complicated when you have two barely grown sons, two little ones at home, and a demanding job. At the end of the day, Probation Officer Eve morphs into Mommy Eve, master of meals, homework, laundry, and bath time.

It's all or nothing

But Eve is irrepressible, a free spirit who still ponders the big questions: Is she too old to dye her hair pink? Does a one-night stand with the veterinarian count as a sex life? Did she let the one man who truly adores her get away? When her oldest son announces he's getting married, Eve's exes come hurtling back into her world, and she sees the men in her life with new eyes. After all, there's more to love than out-of-this-world sex. Though if you're lucky, you can have both....
