Romance Chick-Lit | Contemporary

Kate McPhee never could have imagined herself taking the plunge and crossing the big blue sea to become part of such a sinful world better known as Soap City, U.S.A., but what else is a girl to do when she finds her best friend in the sack with her lover? Life is not supposed to be this complicated, especially for a brilliant London stage actress in her prime. With her tail between her legs, Kate embarks on a rollercoaster ride complete with twists and turns that even a theatre trained actress would have a hard time performing.

As she begins her new career on the set of Live for Tomorrow, Kate soon discovers that being a soap actress takes much more than just beauty and brains. Make-up artists, costume designers, and egocentric actors all contribute to the ever changing scenery as the camera steadily rolls. If only Kate could forget what happened back in London and move on with her life. Being the woman scorned is never the roll a girl wants to play.

Luckily, Kate finds solace in the camaraderie of her eclectic group of friends, including her make-up artist and confidant, Christine. So what Kate has to play a lesbian cop on national television! Although, it does make finding a man a little tricky since half the world thinks she swings the other way. What seems to be a lost cause turns into a dream come true when a sexy new actor strolls on the set and sparks begin to fly. Has Kate finally met the man of her dreams? Only time will tell!

Hughes' debut novel is just the right blend of humor and passion. The characters are so likeable that the reader often forgets they are just make-believe. Being a veteran of the soap opera world, Hughes gives the reader juicy tidbits of life behind the scenes which is rarely revealed. Laugh out-loud and downright comical! SOAPSUDS is the perfect companion for a lazy, summer day lounging at the pool.

SUMMARY

From Emmy Award-winning actress Finola Hughes, a scathingly funny novel that catapults readers into a soap opera.

Finola Hughes brings her intimate knowledge of soap operas- she starred as Anna Devane on "General Hospital" and Alexandra and Anna on "All My Children"--to the page in this scathingly funny novel that catapults readers into the world of daytime drama.

When British actress Kate McPhee needs a life change, moving to Los Angeles to join the cast of "Live For Tomorrow" is the answer. Like Alice falling down the rabbit hole, though, she seems plunged into a surreal world guided by nonsensical rules and populated with outlandish characters. Her so-thin-they're-barely- there co-stars seem to speak their own language and though reigning diva Meredith Contini welcomes Kate to the set, her claws are soon unsheathed when Kate's popularity increases.

As Kate battles on-set politics, her off camera life unravels. She forgets to feed the cat and is late to every important date. But she's really in trouble when she begins to fantasize about her best friend's hunky husband. The line between soap opera and real life blurs as Kate tries to hold onto what is true.
