Berkley Carr moved to Cemetery, Indiana, with plans to open an animal shelter with the unusual name of THE LOVE SHACK. Finally, she feels that her past indiscretion as a teenager is behind her until she comes face to face with someone from those days.
Lawson Salder also moved to Cemetery after many years of getting away from his poverty-stricken youth so with both her and his past, they find it best to try to avoid each other. The matchmakers of Cemetery certainly have other plans. Those helpful people are aided by her thieving cat (Cheese) and her rescue dog (Hero) who keeps trying to rescue him making their coming together impossible to avoid. But when Berkley’s past shows up, Lawson is more than willing to help protect her.
THE LOVE SHACK is another winner for author Lori Foster. Her characters are always fun, interesting and just so normal you could know someone that just might fit in this book. The town of Cemetery is such fun and filled with loving, albeit very nosy people but for the most part they do have the best interests of those they are “helping”.
I loved the way Lawson and Berkley eventually began to talk about both of their pasts and upbringing and if you are like me what happened to Berkley should make you sympathetic and angry at the cruelty of the people who had hurled those names and labels.
Aside from getting to know and watching Lawson and Berkley fall in love, we get to revisit the other people in the town, including the famous mannequin who ends up with a surprise of her own – Kathleen – who always adds a laugh or two. Especially Lawson's reaction to her. The attention Kathleen received, of course, delights Miss Betty Cemetery, the 87-year-old matriarch of the town, who has shown many the loving woman she really is – to the shock of those who thought they knew her.
As with several of Ms. Foster’s books, THE LOVE SHACK offers readers a second romance that comes into play. Oliver Roth, who is opening a fitness spa, and Lark Penny, the newest stylist at the salon. At first, Oliver is a question mark and Lark is so bubbly they seem like a mismatch … but fate has a way of being right.
If you want a small town, sweet romance (with just the right touch of steam) filled with people that you would love to have living around you and include a bit of laughter, and touching moments – you will find this all in THE LOVE SHACK. Of course, if you want to see what happens when some actions and activities are brought on by people who prove that not everyone is a nice person (who doesn’t go unpunished by the way) then this too will be found in THE LOVE SHACK.
When Berkley Carr opened Love Shack Animal Haven, she thought she’d finally put her past behind her. But sometimes she feels the sting of the scandal from her youth, especially when she crosses paths with her handsome neighbor. So she keeps her head down and pours all her love into caring for animals.
Lawson Salder moved to Cemetery, Indiana, to get away from the grinding poverty of his childhood. He barely knows Berkley, but every time he sees her, the shame and pain come crashing back. He's aware she’s got some major baggage of her own. They're better off just avoiding each other.
But that’s impossible in a town full of matchmaking busybodies. The animals seem in on the scheme, too! Berkley’s thieving cat keeps stealing things from him, and her rescue dog repeatedly tries to save Lawson, even though he doesn’t need saving…
