Romance Historical

The mystery of the Hurst Amulet is revealed! New York Times bestselling author Karen Hawkins pits a world-renowned explorer against his strong-willed assistant as they pursue a long-lost treasure.

A DETERMINED EXPLORER

When famed Egyptologist Michael Hurst discovers that the infamous Hurst Amulet is hidden in Scotland, he insists his trusted assistant, Miss Jane Smythe-Haughton, accompany him north. Strangely, the usually unflappable Jane seems perturbed by their destination—the mysterious Isle of Barra. A fascinated Michael watches as his staid assistant transforms, revealing intriguing layers of mystery and vulnerability. Could he be about to uncover not one, but two, precious treasures?

A DAUNTLESS PRINCESS

Once her clan’s princess, Jane fled Barra years ago to avoid a forced marriage. Since then, she has made her living as efficient Miss Smythe-Haughton—the perfect (and highly paid) assistant. Now she must confront her secrets . . . including her feelings for her irascible employer, too-handsome-for-his-own-good Michael Hurst.

A PERILOUS PLEASURE

Others are also searching for the missing amulet, however. Can Jane and Michael learn to trust each other in time to solve two riddles: the location of the Hurst Amulet, and the meaning of the vivid passion flaring between them?

Re: The Taming Of A Scottish Princess

I like the gentle seducer. Perhaps he takes his time, is subtlely working his way into your life, your affections. His moves seem to "sneak upon you"!
(Leanna Morris 12:39pm May 23, 2012)

I'm easy, I have yet to find a hero that I do not like!
(
Barbara Hanson 8:17am May 23, 2012)

Boy this sounds like a good book...can't wait to read it!!!
(
Bonnie Capuano 8:18am May 23, 2012)

I'm currently reading somethingorother "in White," by Queen Nora. It has an
extremely endearing nerd hero. As for Prof. Higgins, I far prefer the first ending
of the original play, in which Eliza dumped the misanthropic jerk and went off
with, oh, whatshisface, Freddie. Freddie was a loser but at least he wasn't a jerk.
She'd be best off with Col. Pickering. (Perhaps he has a young nephew?)
(
Carol Strickland 9:22am May 23, 2012)

I think I'd go for the sexy nerd hero, too. ALthough, reading romance novels, I'm with Barbara, that I always like the heros. Otherwise I wouldn't read the book!

Sharlene Wegner 9:50am May 23, 2012)

I love them all! As long as they are written well and fit the story it is all good! I love the Hurst series and can't wait to read Michael's story!

Whoa, Indiana Jones meets Henry Higgins? How'd I NOT know about this? I am a sucker for the nerd hero...sigh...I've got my own at home :D
(
Serena Polheber 10:21am May 23, 2012)

I LOVE a tortured hero!! Definately my favorite.... however, I don't seem to NOT like any romantic hero.
(
Betty Hamilton 10:52am May 23, 2012)

Hi Karen!
I like all kinds of heroes : the Sexy Nerd, the warrior, the gentle seducer, the alpha, etc. That's why I enjoy so many types of romance.
Thanks for the chance to win!

I love all sorts of heroes - they all make my heart melt. Thanks for the chance to win the tale of yet another wonderful hero. Nancy
(
Nancy Reynolds 11:49am May 23, 2012)

I love a hero who is strong yet sensitive to women, children and animals.
Throw is kindness and lots of humor and you have a wonderful man. If he's
handsome too, all the better.

I love your books, Karen, and wish you continued success with your new
release and beyond.
(
Connie Fischer 11:56am May 23, 2012)

I dig the Physical Warrior hero type with a mix of the sexy nerd. A hero I most recently fell in love with was Jim Owens from The Other Guy's Bride. He was strong and a fighter who could protect, but he was also very smart. On top of that he was funny, there was a part at the beginning of the book where he pretended to be this lawless cowboy ruffian because that was what the heroine stereotyped him as.
I think my fave is also where they're a little broody and dark at the beginning of the journey but then they heal and love by the end.
(

I would love to win this book. Thank you for writing really
wonderful books for us to read
(
Denise Smith 12:00pm May 23, 2012)

So far as my reading, I like lots of types of heroes. On a personal level, though, I'd have to say that sexy nerd rates at the top!
(
Janie McGaugh 12:14pm May 23, 2012)

I love the intellect of the hero - be he a "nerd" or a gentleman that actual has a business. I like that when such characters are written - there is wit and anjoyable conversations, that there are fireworks on multiple levels. I prefer the "nerd" in life too, so maybe I am partial.
(
Carla Carlson 12:38pm May 23, 2012)

I'm not particular about the type of hero. It depends upon the plot as to which type is needed. Once I start reading a book, I block out everything that is going on around me.
(
Anna Speed 12:40pm May 23, 2012)

I don't know if I've read a book with a nerdy hero. They're usually the Alpha warrior type. Now I'm interested in reading about a nerdy hero though.
(
Kristin Bingham 12:47pm May 23, 2012)

Hello, everyone! I am so pleased to visit with you all today! I'm tickled so many of you like the nerdy, brilliant explorer type of hero. I have to say that so far, Michael Hurst is my favorite hero that I've written. I wish this forum had direct replies so I could comment on each post individually, but it doesn't. SO, I'll just pop in now and then and answer any questions you guys may have. Meanwhile, thank you for taking to time to read about Michael and his nerdy-hero-ness! :)
(
Karen Hawkins 12:55pm May 23, 2012)

love the title, hope its a good read
(
Debbi Shaw 2:00pm May 23, 2012)

Karen I loved the comment you made about its fiction why cant we have it all? Oh so true. After all isnt that why we all curl up with good book in the first place to escape?
(
Holly Sines 2:02pm May 23, 2012)

I like the nerd hero and the Regency setting sounds good, too. I have a book by Heather Snow and the Regency heroine is a scientist, I believe (nerd heroine, anyone?).
(
Michelle Fidler 2:07pm May 23, 2012)

I love my heros to be both the nerd and the war-force. I am lucky to have a real-life hero-a badboy. He is my hero cause he did rescue me from a bad situation, and I love him more for that.
I love this series, and I can't wait to read this book.
(
Alisa Jenkins 2:09pm May 23, 2012)

I tend to like them all. I do get tired of the "alpha" male
hero after awhile! My favorite is definitely the nerd. There
is something sexy about an intelligent man...especially
when he is up for a bit of adventure!
(
Erica Secchini 2:46pm May 23, 2012)

Love your books. Looking forward to reading this book.
(
Sarah Pernick 2:49pm May 23, 2012)

I love the variety of heroes out there... he can be nerdy or the fighter, the prince or the pauper, etc... I am always looking forward to the journey he makes to get to his HEA!
(
Colleen Conklin 3:23pm May 23, 2012)

Who doesn't love a sexy Indiana Jones. :) A little bit nerdy but physically strong too. :)
(
May Pau 3:38pm May 23, 2012)

Holly, absolutely! That's exactly what fiction's for. :)

Michelle, I hadn't heard of that book. I'll have to check it out.

Thank you, Alisa! I hope you enjoy it. :)

Karen Hawkins 5:29pm May 23, 2012)

I guess I am easy to please: someone who can take command, save the maiden, and carress the baby all in one!!!
(
Barbara Studer 5:32pm May 23, 2012)

What a combination, Henry Higgins and Indiana Jones!
Blessings,
Marjorie
(
Marjorie Carmony 5:40pm May 23, 2012)

Indiana Jones, a little nerdy and afraid of snakes.. just my kinda guy....
(
Cate Sparks 5:40pm May 23, 2012)

Personally, I'd settle for a "Sexy Nerd Warrior." That way, you get it all!

Later,

Lynn
(
Lynn Rettig 5:44pm May 23, 2012)

Sexy nerd heroes are definitely my favorites. I loved the librarian movies on tv.
(
Sue Farrell 5:49pm May 23, 2012)

I love a hero who is a reader, a thinker, and - of course - brilliantly successful in his field. It doesn't hurt if he's also tall, dark, sexy and has a six-pack abs like Explorer and Egyptologist Michael Hurst. Your words of course!
(
Kathleen Bianchi 5:53pm May 23, 2012)

Ilove to read this type of book. thanks for the giveaway.
(
Mary Hay 5:58pm May 23, 2012)

I will also always love Indiana Jones. =) And I love when authors use him as
inspiration!
I love the strong alpha warrior, turns me to a puddle of jello. But really I am not
going to say no to any of them =)
(
Lexi Hansen 6:19pm May 23, 2012)

Sexy Nerds can be great fun - I'm thinking McGyver.
(
Diane Sallans 6:30pm May 23, 2012)

I prefer the gentle seducer type of hero, and a great body doesn't hurt either......
(
Joy Gifford 6:53pm May 23, 2012)

Yes, yes, yes! Keep writing about those nerd heroes - with great abs!
(
Mary Slack 7:12pm May 23, 2012)

I love all the heroes in romance books. Can't really say that I have a favorite one.

I have been waiting for this book, Karen, and can't wait to read it.
(
Cathy Phillips 8:47pm May 23, 2012)

I like all kinds of heros, but sexy nerd is one of my favorites.
(
Lisa Kendall 8:47pm May 23, 2012)

Not only do I love the sexy nerd hero in novels, but I married my own. :^)
(
Heidi Durham 8:59pm May 23, 2012)

Both "The Sexy Nerd Hero" & "The Gentle Seducer Hero" appeal to me the most but sometimes the "Physical Warrior Hero" is good too so I guess it all depends on what kind of story I want to read at the moment.
(
Chelsea Knestrick 9:23pm May 23, 2012)

You might find my comment a bit odd, but I like my hero a cross between the nerdy type and the gentle seducer. The reason I give that answer is because if they're totally nerdy, the romance tends to be a bit stiff, if you pardon the pun. He needs to have the gentle seductive side to him to give the story a bit of air and sustenance that sweeps you off your feet and makes you not only fall in love with him, but get swept away with the story line. I love the thought process you put into your book, and remember the characters you've chosen very well. I would love to read it more than you know. Wonderful cover, and I'm sure a wonderful read!! Congratulations!!
(
Peggy Roberson 9:45pm May 23, 2012)

What a great idea! Indianna Jones/'enry 'iggins all wrapped up into one. The strong virile type & the gentle bookish man all rolled into a delicious hero. I do like them both; witty, charming, intelligent, & "human". The book sounds like another of your "good reads"!!
(
Jean Merriott 9:47pm May 23, 2012)

Thank you all for such warm and encouraging comments! It looks like you guys are on the same page I am -- that sexy nerds are terrific heroes. And oh, I hope you will all like Michael Hurst!
(
Karen Hawkins 11:00pm May 23, 2012)

I love your books. Especially about all of those Scotsmen!
(
Charlene Fraley 11:20pm May 23, 2012)

I like the physical warrior type hero... although I LOVE Indiana Jones. One of my
husband's favorite movies, believe it or not, is My Fair Lady. I have been called
a heartless guttersnipe a a time or two. Thank you, Professor Higgins. Lol.
(
Jane Limback 11:38pm May 23, 2012)

i love the color of the book and then they look great i am sorry that i have not read any of them would love to read and blog on them
(
Desiree Reilly 11:40pm May 23, 2012)

Another series for me to fall in love with!
I am a fan of all heroes. There is a place and time for each one. Sometimes even more than one at a time, when I'm really greedy!
Good luck and happy writing!
(
Tracie Travis 11:44pm May 23, 2012)

I love nerds, perhaps because I've got more in common with them than most other people; I've always been considered a nerd myself, except for my love of romances. However, I also read books on subjects from archaeology and astronomy to geology to theology, and others between. It all depends on my mood.
As for Scotland, many of my favorites books are set there. I started hearing about it from my mother who spent 6 months there improving her English there.
(
Sigrun Schulz 11:55pm May 23, 2012)

When I read "Regency sexy nerd heroes" I thought, does she mean Oscar Wilde? In those days the image we have of intellectual men is mostly poets. This was not of course a desired quality in a lady as an intellectual young woman might not catch a husband. Once married she could reveal her true colours and I am sure many women ended up running the husband's estate, especially if he was away at war. I don't think the mooning poet type would be my hero, but the adventurous type you describe, studying Egypt and deciphering heiroglyphs, that lad would go down a treat!

I'll take a sexy, nerd hero any day. I like my men intelligent.

I much prefer a sexy nerd to a self-absorbed (but reclaimed) jerk who can revert
to type. Never think you can change a man--it will only be temporary. You are
so better off with a nerd--definitely much happier.
