Kelsey's mother hasn't left their house in 17 years. She was
kidnapped at Kelsey's age and is fearfully worried that the
tragedy will repeat itself. Kelsey tries to keep under the
radar, but a car accident that puts her and her mother's
name in the newspaper changes everything. One day, she
discovers her mother is missing. In order to get to the
truth, Kelsey will have to dig into the past to solve the
problems of the present.
THE SAFEST LIES is an emotional thrill ride. Kelsey has a
strong voice, and the love for her mother is clear from the
first chapter. The theme of fear, particularly fear in
families, is fascinating, and adds a beautiful nuance to the
story. Readers will wonder where exactly fear comes from and
what it means to go into battle with it. Kelsey grows
remarkably as she navigates her own fears and worries while
also wanting to experience life and be brave.
Though the plot has a couple of predictable moments, the
structure is very refreshing and stands out. What is often
saved for the big finish happens about midway in the book,
leaving an even bigger mystery for the rest. The action will
keep readers on the edge of their seats, desperate for
answers. The romance with Ryan and the friendship with
Annika add several funny and sweet moments, showing the
power of good relationships, trust, and honesty.
Megan Miranda is a master storyteller with her latest, THE
SAFEST LIES. The complicated mother-daughter relationship,
sweet romance, and layered mystery will keep readers
frantically turning the pages.
Fans of Jennifer Donnelly and E. Lockhart will be captivated
by this YA psychological mystery about a girl who must face
her darkest fears—but can she outrun the past?
Kelsey has lived most of her life in a shadow of fear,
raised to see danger everywhere. Her mother hasn’t set foot
outside their front door in seventeen years, since she
escaped from her kidnappers with nothing but her attacker’s
baby growing inside her—Kelsey.
Kelsey knows she’s supposed to keep a low profile and stay
off the grid for their protection, but that plan is
shattered when her dramatic car accident and rescue by
volunteer firefighter and classmate Ryan Baker sparks media
coverage.
A few days later, she arrives home to find her mother
missing. Now, to have a chance at a future, Kelsey will have
to face her darkest fears. Because someone is coming for
her. And the truth about the past may end up being the most
dangerous thing of all.
