Lily Yu can touch another human or supernatural being and determine their
type of magic and how strong it is. She is also an FBI agent for the Magical
Crimes unit, serving as a touch sensitive. This is a very useful commodity
in solving paranormal crime. She is also a newlywed, freshly married to
Rule Turner, the alpha of the local Lupi's, a wolf shifter pack. As MIND
MAGIC begins, she is being sent out of state to investigate a murder
suspected to be magic related. Lily also comes across a young woman
trying to save her friends from a shadowy group who are keeping them
hostage to use their magical talents for their own nefarious ends. It is not
long before Lily discovers that these two investigations lead to the same
perpetrators.
MIND MAGIC is a good read, so much better than the last book. We are
back to Lily and Rule here, and where the focus is firmly on Lupi politics
(which I enjoy), and the magical world of the series inhabitants. You can tell
from the cover that the Dragons feature prominently in the story, as well as
another group of supernatural beings that don't make it into too many urban
fantasy/
paranormal romance books. The whole story here was a bit different for UF, and in
a good way.
There are two reasons this was not quite a five-star read for me. One was
that the ending was a tad too rushed and anti-climactic after all the buildup.
The other was that the storyline was a little slow to get going. There were
three threads, and two of them were a bit of dry reading. It wasn't until Lily
and Demi met up and the three threads began to converge that the book
truly captured my full interest. From there, the storyline took off and never
looked back.
It's really great to know that this far into the World of the Lupi series that
author Eileen Wilks still has great plotlines and a firm handle on the general
series arc. MIND MAGIC is not the place to start reading the series,
however. There is too much backstory to easily pick up this far into the
series, but World of the Lupi is a great UF series to start at the beginning.
