Written from personal experience, this quirky SF story
introduces us to the scariness of living with bi-polar
disorder, as Katie swings from manic to depressive in
minutes. Her husband decides that the meds aren't working
and more serious treatment is needed. The only surgeon
carrying out an operation has back problems and lives on
the Moon whose reduced gravity allows him to work.
ROCK CRAZY shows poor Scott McGowan getting himself posted
to Rockton on the Moon for a six-month contract, intending
to take Katie and leave her behind with the medics. He
loves her so much, but he can't take any more unpredictable
behaviour and besides, her manic moods have started getting
violent, so someone is going to get hurt. Men who mistreat
women are ejected from Rockton's airlock, and the city is
atmosphere and temperature controlled. She should be
safe. Katie is determined not to be babied, and not to
submit herself to a medical procedure for a neurochip
implant. Nobody's going to make a robot out of her!
Lower gravity, cramped quarters, local materials lending
themselves to glass bricks... Rockton is strange. Katie
has space sickness and can't keep food down. When the
inevitable occurs and she rows with Scott over her crazy
spending sprees he tells her he's leaving. She has no way
to get home and has to look for work. But nobody on the
Moon needs an English major. As her sickness increases and
she passes out while waitressing, she's sent for a checkup
and is told she's pregnant. She'll have to quit the meds
immediately; and she can't get a shuttle home.
Resourcefulness and distrust of her ex-husband make Katie
determined to manage somehow. Her adult romance story is
mixed with depictions of the Moon as both a mining base and
a tourist destination, with a cafe and gift shop being
built. This vivid, entertaining novella about a strong
woman will appeal to SF fans and to people wanting to
understand mental health problems.
Rochelle Weber is a US Navy veteran. Her first novel is
called Rock Bound and I'll be looking out for more of her
work if it's anything like as good as ROCK CRAZY.
Abandoned, pregnant and bi-polar, Katie McGowan's going
crazy on that God-forsaken rock the Moon!
Katie McGowan is bi-polar, and she's run the gamut of
medications. Everyone's telling her she should go to the
Moon and have microchip surgery, but she's afraid she'll
become a robot. In a last-ditch, tough love effort to force
her to get the chip, her husband, Scott takes her to the
Moon and divorces her when she decks him. Then she discovers
she's pregnant. She can't have the surgery or take her meds
until after the baby's born.
Scott's elated when he hears he's going to be a father and
naturally assumes Katie will take him back. He always
intended to remarry her as soon she had the surgery. He has
no clue how badly he hurt her, how thoroughly he's broken
her trust-or that he may not get her back at all.
