In a broken-down camper deep in a forest live six-year-old
Nessa and fifteen-year-old Carey, along with a mother who is
addicted to drugs and abuses them regularly. But Nessa and
Carey have each other, and Nessa depends on Carey to live.
Their mother's periods of absence grows longer and more
frequent until she finally never comes home. Children's
Services intervene and find the girls, placing them with
Carey's father, who hasn't seen her in ten years. The world
outside of the woods is drastically different and the girls
must learn to adapt in a wholly foreign environment, but
their secrets are deep and dark, and if they reveal them,
they might just lose everything.
This is not light reading and could be trigger worthy to
those who have suffered from abuse. Having said this, it's
not your typical tale. What these girls have been through is
horrifying and unimaginable, but the story does not focus on
the atrocities as much as it does the human will to survive.
There are candid moments and there are heartbreaking
moments, but what shines through the pages is the pure
experience of life, the poignant moments that are caught to
perfection by the author, Emily Murdoch. It's her beautiful
writing that gives this story a softened edge, a palatable
tolerance. I carried Nessa and Carey with me long after I
put IF YOU FIND ME down. A completely fantastic read, I
highly
recommend IF YOU FIND ME.
"There are some things you can't leave behind... A
broken-down camper hidden deep in a national forest is the
only home fifteen year-old Carey can remember. The trees
keep guard over her threadbare existence, with the one
bright spot being Carey's younger sister, Jenessa, who
depends on Carey for her very survival. All they have is
each other, as their mentally ill mother comes and goes with
greater frequency. Until that one fateful day their mother
disappears for good, and two strangers arrive. Suddenly, the
girls are taken from the woods and thrust into a bright and
perplexing new world of high school, clothes and boys. Now,
Carey must face the truth of why her mother abducted her ten
years ago, while haunted by a past that won't let her go...
a dark past that hides many a secret, including the reason
Jenessa hasn't spoken a word in over a year. Carey knows she
must keep her sister close, and her secrets even closer, or
risk watching her new life come crashing down. "--
