A plantation house which contains a ghost? Rachael isn't
sure what to believe, but the current owners of the Weston
Plantation house have been thwarted in their efforts to
build a hotel. Apparently a ghost called Ingrid, wife of a
former owner, scrawls unhappy messages in the dust. She
died at Weston in Georgia but was buried at the family's
second home at Turtle Tear in Florida, and her spirit is
said not to have left Weston. Rachael and her partner
Merrick are now renovating Turtle Tear and about to host
a wedding. Rachel uncovers a trunk of old possessions and
letters, and her curiosity leads to her becoming just a
little obsessed.
TAKE ME BACK is an erotic love story told in present tense.
Merrick has a lot of unresolved issues in his past, which
make him cross with Rachael for not telling him everything.
She doesn't wish to sound crazy, but she realises that
wanting to find an old recipe for key lime pie is not a
wholly convincing excuse for travelling from Florida to
Georgia to look through a barn full of kitchen equipment.
The owner of Weston sees a message smeared on a window and
panics. But Rachael investigates and finds herself thinking
that maybe a ghost cannot cross the water to an island to
be in her burial site. What to do? Her own relationship is
going downhill fast, and she barely even notices.
This novella by Kelli Maine will appeal to those interested
in family trees and histories, as well as being an unusual
adult romance. Rachael's habit of constantly speaking to
Merrick in her mind as she tells her story, "I wondered
what you would make of it," can make it hard to get into
the narrative at the start. There is an earlier book
called Taken and it would probably be better to read that
one first to get a good grip on the characters and
locations, before reading TAKE ME BACK.
Rachael DeSalvo is haunted by the past. She's come home to her beloved Turtle Tear Island, where she looks forward to happy days and bliss-filled nights in the arms of Merrick Rocha. But when she finds a trunk full of old photo albums and handwritten notes, Rachael soon realizes that the island has not given up all its secrets . . . For long before Rachael and Merrick made Turtle Tear Resort their home, this historic island was a haven for sensual, forbidden affairs. As Rachael and Merrick work to restore the grand hotel to its former glory, they will be caught in the perfect maelstrom of conflict and desire
