A master vintner finds his world crashing around him when a
personal family secret is revealed. An out-of-character
drink in an Adelaide bar brings the shocked Australian in
contact with an interesting young woman. Ethan Masters
isn't looking for company, but something about backpacker
Isobel Fyfe seems to be just what he needs.
Isobel is a photographer who flips from photojournalistic
shoots in wartorn countries to bread and butter
assignments, and her roving life makes her more decisive
and self-sufficient than the usual pampered society women.
Neither of them wants more than a one-night-stand, but
unexpectedly Ethan's sister Tamsyn has hired Isobel for a
shoot at her wedding party business on the estate. And
Ethan already has a girlfriend of sorts, Shanal, a part-
Indian lady with a doctorate whom everyone expects him to
marry. After that ONE SECRET NIGHT Isobel and Ethan's
latent attraction won't be denied, and both their lives are
facing change. But Isobel's decision to tell Tamsyn the
family secret Ethan confided in her seems like a betrayal
too far.
I liked the locations which are well described and varied,
including an African jail cell, and there are just enough
details about the art of winemaking for genuine flavour.
This is a refined Australian story, devoid of brawny Bruces
swilling beer and shouting 'Strewth!' and gives a good
impression of the society and prosperity of the country.
The winemaker is depicted as a controlling man, which may
be a product of his background and job, while the
rootlessness of the photographer has not brought her
happiness. Tamsyn was actually my favourite character, a
stable, home-making intelligent girl who yet wanted to run
an upmarket business and contribute to her family.
ONE SECRET NIGHT is a good outing for Yvonne Lindsay, who
visited the Adelaide locations while researching for
her 'Master Vintners' series. Romance readers can enjoy
this adult tale while learning how the Shiraz in their
wineglass is produced!
