Fidelis O. Mkparu

Fidelis O. Mkparu

Dr. Fidelis O. Mkparu was born and raised in Onitsha, Nigeria by his parents Dennis and Virginia. He attended Sacred Heart Primary School, Onitsha. After primary school, he attended Government Secondary School, Afikpo, Nigeria where he graduated with distinction. He was the editor of Government Secondary School Afikpo monthly magazine "Purple Times" from 1976-1977.

He moved to the United States of America at the age of 17 to attend college. He received a BS degree with honors. He was a Ph.D. candidate in Biophysics at Wayne State University. He attended Meharry Medical School on Readers digest scholarship. In 1985 he enrolled at the University of Tennessee Medical School as a state of Tennessee Medical Scholar. He was also a recipient of Incentive Medical Scholarship. He was a National Institute of Health (NIH) summer student research scholar at Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1984 and 1985.

Dr. Mkparu completed his cardiology fellowship at The University of Connecticut Medical Center under the tutelage of the world renowned cardiologist Dr. Arnold M. Katz. He was awarded the coveted NIH fellowship in basic and clinical cardiovascular research. After his training in Connecticut, he became a "Spaulding Cardiovascular diseases fellow" in advanced cardiac imaging and function (Nuclear Cardiology and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging/ Spectroscopy) at Harvard Medical School/ Massachusetts General Hospital. He was inducted into Paul Dudley White Honor Society in 1994 by the Cardiovascular Department, Massachusetts General Hospital/ Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Mkparu was honored by the American Heart Association (AHA) in 2009. He is one of the founding members of African Education Fund (AEF), and a member of their board of directors.

Dr. Mkparu is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University and has been in private Cardiology practice since 1997. He is married with three children
