Joseph A. Califano Jr.
Served as President Lyndon Johnson's chief assistant for
domestic affairs and as Secretary of Health, Education, and
Welfare from 1977 to 1979. He practiced law in Washington,
D.C. and New York until he founded Center on Addiction and
Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA). He is the
author of nine books and a member of the National Academy of
Science's Institute of Medicine.
