Romance Historical

“A refined gentleman, age 25, of wealth and education, seeks the acquaintance, with a view to matrimony, of a high-minded, kind-hearted lady who prefers an evening of quiet conversation to the lively demands of society.”

Edwina Hargrove knows that this “gentleman” was, in fact, Ashton Trewelyn, a rake notorious for seducing the young and naive. In fact, five decent women have already been tricked and bundled off to the continent for scandalous purposes. There was a way to thwart his scheme though—by shadowing this devilishly handsome Casanova and warning his prey.

If only it were that simple. Wounded and weary, Ashton Trewelyn returns home to London from the King’s Royal Rifles, but soon discovers a coded message that has implications to the Crown and his family. His only hope to unravel the mystery lies in the enigmatic Edwina’s ability to recognize patterns. Even as he leads her on a path of secret societies and risque temptations, he discovers she arouses his jaded soul with temptations of her own. Must they risk everything to decipher Casanova’s code?

Re: The Casanova Code

I actually own a sweatshirt which has printed on the front -

Wanted: Dangerously handsome man. Must like horses, have money and look good in jeans. Will train.

I wore it when I was getting to know my husband among a group of people, and he said it caught his eye all right.
(Clare O'Beara 6:05am June 18, 2012)

Wanted: One all around nice guy - good-looking, athletic, good under pressure - apply to today
Vickie Dailey 7:16am June 18, 2012)

Wanted: Tall dark and sexy, must have a good sense of humor, love
animals, have a love of books and like their women on the fluffy side.
Clare O. I love your sweatshirt. Very funny.

Lori Meehan 7:22am June 18, 2012)

Looking for my Mr. Wonderful, weak-willed need not apply. :)
Good luck and happy writing!
Tracie Travis 7:49am June 18, 2012)

Wanted: A wonderful warm Christian man with a sense of humor. Apply today...
Bonnie Capuano 8:17am June 18, 2012)

Hmm... I would say:

Smart, funny, good-looking, kind...

Now if only the right people would apply!
May Pau 9:32am June 18, 2012)

what does it say about me that I would want it to say (If I weren't married of course)
Wanted: brooding bad boy that only I can make smile and lighten up lol
Sharon D 9:55am June 18, 2012)

Clare - I want that sweatshirt!!! Very cool -especially as it led to your
husband. Sounds like a romance novel (grin)

Vickie -
Love the good under pressure part. Truly an admirable quality that would
go nicely with my own "screaming crazy lunatic" under pressure
Donna Macmeans 10:45am June 18, 2012)

Lori - I agree completely with your ad. A good sense of humor is a must
have in my book, and tall, dark and sexy ain't too shabby either (grin).
Donna Macmeans 10:49am June 18, 2012)

Tracie - Love that "weak-willed need not apply" I wonder if the guy would
recognize himself in that request (grin). I do love a man of conviction and
the strength to carry through on them. Thanks for stopping by.
Donna Macmeans 10:56am June 18, 2012)

Bonnie - I agree totally with a good sense of humor. I think that and
intelligence go hand in hand, don't you? To be with me, one MUST have a
good sense of humor. Thanks for stopping by
Donna Macmeans 10:58am June 18, 2012)

Hi May - Yeah, that's the trick, isn't it. Sometimes the not so smart see
themselves as possessing those qualities, and the ones that truly possess
the qualities skipped reading the paper that day. LOL! Thanks for stopping
by, May
Donna Macmeans 11:01am June 18, 2012)

Sharon - I love that you want to reach past that brooding bad boy shell and
make lighten up the hero beneath. You are a woman of compassion that
enjoys a challenge - that's what the ad says about you (grin).
Donna Macmeans 11:03am June 18, 2012)

Just wanted to say thanks to Fresh Fiction for hosting me today. Mwah!
Sorry for the late arrival. I'm having internet difficulties at home so I had to
hightail it to the library to connect. Of course that meant I had to shower
and dress to do so. Not sure they'd appreciate me appearing in my pjs
Donna Macmeans 11:05am June 18, 2012)

Oh, I love Clare O'Beara's shirt! I'd probably write
something similar. Although, when my husband and I met via
the internet, I made it clear that horses, dogs, and cats
were part of my life and I would not give them up for any
man. My husband, being the smart man that he is, gave me a
horse instead of a diamond when he proposed. Well, and a
sapphire too! Because we all know horse girls would rather
have horses than diamonds!
Amy Rogers 11:16am June 18, 2012)

After some of the guys I have gone out with this is what I want:

Wanted! A nice normal regular guy. Must not be hung up on old girl friends or ex-wives.
Lori Yost 11:38am June 18, 2012)

Woman Seeks man: Must make time fly away.
Roxana Perez 11:50am June 18, 2012)

I always think - when I see those ads - Be careful of what you ask for.
Beth Elder 11:50am June 18, 2012)

I just want a man that can cook and clean! Kind and sweet would be nice also.
Gail Hurt 11:58am June 18, 2012)

Your book sounds great. I'd love to win a copy - but even if I don't win, it sounds like I'll have to get it to read. Best of luck with it. Nancy
Nancy Reynolds 11:59am June 18, 2012)

Your book sounds wonderful! Thank you for the opportunity for a chance on winning a copy. Most of us would love a man that could cook, clean and take care of the children but a
little money doesn't hurt either. I also enjoy the man with the quiet conversation because you never know what may come after that quiet evening alone!
Ann Thaxton 12:18pm June 18, 2012)

Just a regular guy.. employed, sense of humor and that's about it.. Had one for over 30 years... irreplaceable.
Cate Sparks 12:27pm June 18, 2012)

Oregon - Smart man! I'm an animal person as well, but more of a citified
animal person (grin). We have a kitten named CoCo. My son just moved
back home with the sweetest American Bulldog named Rogue. The two
pets are still getting used to each other - but I've always had cats and dogs
growing up. I know the two will acclimate. My husband gave me a puppy
for my birthday years ago. A horse works as well. Thanks for stopping by.
Donna Macmeans 1:08pm June 18, 2012)

I thin I would say: Regular guy... has to be employed, or in college, sense of humor, wants kids, nice.
Samatha Hodges 1:12pm June 18, 2012)

Lori - LOL! A woman of some experience, I take it. Have you seen the
movie The Exotic Marigold Hotel? I might not have the name exactly right.
It has a scene where's there's this guy who must be in his 80s on one of
those speed date nights for people in their 30s-40s. He makes a statement
about how everyone lies in these things. Yes, a regular normal guy will no
ex-issues. That would be a keeper.
Donna Macmeans 1:13pm June 18, 2012)

The ad would say: "Honesty's the best policy."
(The rest would be wonderful to explore the rest of "our" lives, so no sense in advertising any more than that....)
Elaine Seymour 1:14pm June 18, 2012)

Roxana - Must make time fly - yeah, I can appreciate that. You certainly
wouldn't want one that makes ten minutes seem like a year! I hope you'll
give Casanova Code a try as that's what I try to do - make your reading
time fly by with fast pacing and interesting reading. Thanks for stopping by.
Donna Macmeans 1:15pm June 18, 2012)

Beth - That is so true on so many levels! Fortunately I got the complete
package when I wished for my hunky husband (grin). I think Edwina gets
more than she wishes for in Casanova Code. Hope you'll give it a try.
Thanks for stopping by.
Donna Macmeans 1:18pm June 18, 2012)

Gail - LOL - and be able to cook something beyond hamburgers and hot
dogs! Due to my lack of internet, I 'm camped out at the library. I dashed
home to make lunch as my husband comes home for lunch. He beat me
home....what did we have for lunch? The hot dogs he'd already started
cooking. Thanks for stopping by!
Donna Macmeans 1:21pm June 18, 2012)

Nancy -

I had a great time writing this book! I learned so much about secret codes
and Japanese erotica in the process. Who says romance isn't educational?
Hope you give Casanova Code a try. Thanks for stopping by.
Donna Macmeans 1:23pm June 18, 2012)

Ann - a little money never hurts (grin). I think my husband is a quiet
conversationalist - I'm not sure because I tend to be the one always talking.
LOL. He gets to kick back and just smile a lot. Thanks for stopping by!
Donna Macmeans 1:25pm June 18, 2012)

Hi Cate!

Yes, a sense of humor is mandatory - at least in my world. Employment
would be critical as well. i love a competent man. Thanks for stopping by!
Donna Macmeans 1:27pm June 18, 2012)

Hi Samantha - I certainly agree with the employed part - but someone in
college would most likely be too young for me (grin). I do like an educated
man, though - and one with a sense of humor. Thanks so much for
stopping by.
Donna Macmeans 1:30pm June 18, 2012)

Elaine - You're a brave woman albeit an honest one. However, honesty is
critical to a longterm relationship. How else can one trust? Thanks for
stopping by. I hope you give Casanova Code a try.
Donna Macmeans 1:32pm June 18, 2012)

I'd want someone who is intelligent and honest, with a good sense of humor--just like the one I actually married!
G S Moch 1:33pm June 18, 2012)

"Not afraid to work and a wonderful sense of humor."
Marjorie Carmony 2:08pm June 18, 2012)

G S - How did we manage to do that, so many years ago? Pick out
someone intelligent and honest and good for the long haul. I always think I
must have been incrediably lucky as I'm not sure anyone is smart at 19. Of
course, he managed to be pretty lucky himself to have caught me - LOL.
Either way, we've been married for almost 40 years. Intelligence, honesty
and a whole lot of love. Thanks for stopping by GS!
Donna Macmeans 2:12pm June 18, 2012)

My only requirements would be a tall, funny man. Brown eyes wouldn't hurt either!
Renee Pajda 2:12pm June 18, 2012)

Not afraid to work is a biggie. Good idea to include that in the ad. There's
always so much work that has to be done, isn't there? Which is why a
wonderful sense of humor is also important. Good ad - Marjorie
Donna Macmeans 2:14pm June 18, 2012)

I would write:
Wanted nice guy. Brawn and brain required. Must not shave head.
Your book sounds delicious. It has a different twist to it. I am looking foward to reading it.
Kathleen Yohanna 2:24pm June 18, 2012)

Smart, fun, and with a sense of humour and who enjoys reading.
Chelsea Knestrick 2:25pm June 18, 2012)

I used to have a sweatshirt with Opus (y'all do remember Opus the Penguin, don't you?) on it with "Valentine Needed" printed above him (he was sitting and waving his tie), and "Apply Within" printed below him.

Unfortunately, the only candidate I got was someone I wouldn't have been caught dead with!!

So, nowadays I'd write something to the effect of: Wanted: Gentleman caller. Must have irreverent sense of humour, love to travel, classical music (although you don't need to play, it might come in handy), and cats.

Lynn Rettig 2:34pm June 18, 2012)

Kathleen - yes, this one is a little different - but in a good way. LOL. You
know my last book, REDEEMING THE ROGUE, was nominated for a "Most
Innovative Fiction" award from Romantic Times. I'm thinking if they thought
that was innovative - wait till they read about secret codes and Japanese
erotica (grin).

Sounds like you have shaved head issues. Is a rapidly thinning head,
okay? (That would be my poor husband) Love the brawn and brains.
Need both!

this is how i met my husband so im all for this i would love to read this by the way we are still married after 14 years
Denise Smith 3:08pm June 18, 2012)

Renee -
Definitely like a guy with a sense of humor. My husband has big brown
eyes. I can understand the attraction. Thanks for coming by!
Donna Macmeans 3:09pm June 18, 2012)

Chelsea -
Love the "who enjoys reading" line. That way, they can read while we read
and still feel included! Thanks for stopping by!
Donna Macmeans 3:10pm June 18, 2012)

Looking for man with the following traits: Honest, kind, personable, sense of humor, handsome, good listener. Enjoys peace and quiet as much as good conversation.
Leanna Morris 3:15pm June 18, 2012)

Lynn -

I remember Opus. Loved that cartoon.

Good addition with the "love to travel." Interesting addition with the love of
classical music - do you play? I think with this ad you'll have much better
results than with the sweatshirt. Thanks for stopping by!
Donna Macmeans 3:17pm June 18, 2012)

Denise - how exiting!
I know more people that have met their spouses through an internet match
site. It's so hard these days to rely on an introduction to lead you to the
right one.

Yes - please check out The Casanova Code. I think you will enjoy it. And
may you be married for another 14 years (and more).
Donna Macmeans 3:20pm June 18, 2012)

Leanna - If you add "must love dogs and cats" I would try to steal the
respondents from you LOL. I think you hit all the key ingredients to a great
match. Thanks for stopping by!
Donna Macmeans 3:22pm June 18, 2012)

Leanna - I think you captured all the major ingredients for a great match! (
I would probably have added a line to ensure a love of my kitty and dogs in
general - but that's me). Hope you give Casanova Code a try!
Donna Macmeans 3:27pm June 18, 2012)

Looking for someone independently wealthy with unlimited credit cards. Book sounds great
Sheila True 3:42pm June 18, 2012)

Shella - LOL - so does your ad!

Love the independently wealthy guy. Hope he's willing to share those
cards, otherwise it'll be a short relationship.

Thanks - I love this book. Great fun with memorable characters and sexy
to boot. What more could you want? (uh-independent wealth...credit
cards...) Hope you give it a try.
Donna Macmeans 3:58pm June 18, 2012)

My advertisement would read: Looking for an honest, faithful, humorous, handsome man to shake my world and take me away.
Cathy Phillips 4:17pm June 18, 2012)

I would want an animal lover who likes to golf.
Sue Farrell 4:23pm June 18, 2012)

Independently wealthy, loyal & protective gentleman who loves
to travel. One who loves cats, has a sense of humor, and
enjoys reading in quiet evenings that may lead to other more
pleasurable pursuits ;-)
Lenna Hendershott 5:12pm June 18, 2012)

I'd have to advertize for a man who loves kids and family as
much as I do.
Mary Hay 5:24pm June 18, 2012)

Animal lover, have a sense of humor, enjoys amusement parks, kind, honest, reliable... :)
Colleen Conklin 5:33pm June 18, 2012)

What an intriguing novel! My first question would be WHY is our heroine
checking out these ads? Is it because she is (secretly) interested in seeking
out someone with "special qualities?"

Hmm.....if I placed my own ad, I would say that I am seeking someone with a
fabulous sense of humor. If it came to pass that we met, he would have to
show that humor to truly gain my interest!

Thanks for the giveaway. "The Casanova Code" sounds like a truly fun novel!
Connie Fischer 6:03pm June 18, 2012)

I never would have thought of personal add in the Victorian era. They would
have had to word it very carefully =)
For mine I would put:
An unattached cultured beauty of 26, seeking a gentleman ready to settle
down, who has high standards, love of the outdoors, and is pleasing to look

Hmm...not too bad for a Victorian one. (of course I picked an age and said
unattached, don't let my hubby read that, ha!).
Lexi Hansen 6:05pm June 18, 2012)

Wanted a strong Christian man in his 60's with no children currently living at home. Has to have a good sense of humor. Looks not important,in a relationship, charater is.
Kathleen Bianchi 6:12pm June 18, 2012)

I would say charming with a lovely sense of humor.
Maureen Emmons 6:30pm June 18, 2012)

Linda Luinstra 6:35pm June 18, 2012)

Hmm, my ad would be quite shallow in that looks would be important. LOL

Unattached wealthy bluestocking, looking for a titled & handsome gentleman. Must like dancing and animals.
Kim C 6:47pm June 18, 2012)

Cathy - Another person insisting upon humor - love it! I think intelligence
and a good sense of humor go hand in hand, don't you? At least, I make
sure my heroes have both (grin). Hope you give Casanova Code a try!
Donna Macmeans 7:12pm June 18, 2012)

Sue - Amongst my husband and our friends, I'm beginning to wonder if
there's a man out there that DOESN"T like to golf? LOL - I'm with you on
the animal lover. And as long as the guy doesn't expect me to golf with
him, I'm with you there too (grin). It gives me time to do my own thing.
Thanks for stopping by!
Donna Macmeans 7:14pm June 18, 2012)

Wow Lenna - I like your ad! That love to travel is important, isn't it? I'm
planning a trip to Scotland to do research for another Rake Patrol book and
am so glad my husband is planning to go along. That's a heck of a trip to
be by one's self. I think I like a man who enjoys exploring new things.
Keeps us young.
Donna Macmeans 7:17pm June 18, 2012)

Hi Mary !

Yes - Those men that love kids and family are true heroes, aren't they?
That's true sex appeal - seeing a dad enjoy the company of his kids. Good
Donna Macmeans 7:19pm June 18, 2012)

Colleen -

Enjoys Amusement Parks - now that's a new one for today. Are you a
person that loves roller coasters and travels around the country to ride
them all? I'm not certain my stomach could handle roller coasters any
more, but I do love carousels and have a large collection of carousel
horses. I think it's the inner child in me. Love the ad. Thanks for stopping
Donna Macmeans 7:22pm June 18, 2012)

Hi Connie -

Well, you see sometimes the ads in the personal columns were written in
code. The two people exchanging communications don't wish anyone to
eavesdrop on thei conversation they probably shouldn't be having. So my
heroine, who can read code, reads the personal ads looking for these
coded messages.

I hope you give Casanova Code a try. It really is a fun novel - and a sexy
one as well.
Donna Macmeans 7:25pm June 18, 2012)

Lexi -

I didn't realize the Victorians had personal ads either - until a friend sent me
an article from the NY TImes about honest - to - goodness Victorian
personal ads (with examples). Then I stumbled upon a reference to the
personals in a Sherlock Holmes novel placed in the same time period as
my story. I was hooked (grin).

Lovely personal ad, BTW. You should request a carte-de-visite, which is
basically a photograph, to verify that he is pleasant to look upon. Well
Donna Macmeans 7:30pm June 18, 2012)

Kathleen - I love my kids. I truly do. But I feel that I have paid my dues as
far as motherhood goes and it's time to move on to the next phase of life.
Sounds like you are in a similar place. Very nice ad! Hope you give
CASANOVA CODE a read while you wait for Mr. Right.
Donna Macmeans 7:32pm June 18, 2012)

Maureen -

Charming is nice. A man with manners is a rare treasure these days. A
sense of humor is a must-have deal breaker. Nice ad! Thanks for giving it
a try - and thanks for reading about the Casanova Code.
Donna Macmeans 7:35pm June 18, 2012)

Linda - LOL - That's great! I hadn't appreciated how many manly
adjectives began with the letter H! I bet that one would get lots of
responses. Thanks for stopping by - and should you give Casanova Code
a try, I hope you love it.
Donna Macmeans 7:37pm June 18, 2012)

Kim -

I think a wealthy bluestocking will get lots of responses to her ad. LOL.
Thanks for stopping by and playing the game. Hope you give Casanova
Code a try.
Donna Macmeans 7:39pm June 18, 2012)

Generous, kind homebody, not allergic to wool or old houses needed to share the daily paper and home-cooked meals with rabid knitter and gourmet cook. Sense of humor advised!
Beth Fuller 7:47pm June 18, 2012)

Nice guy, who is kind and has a sense of humor.
Rita Wray 8:14pm June 18, 2012)

A kind person who is nice and will always be there for me. Must like movies and cats.
Michelle Fidler 8:20pm June 18, 2012)

Crafty and a good premise. Looks like a fun and lively read. A sense of humor would be my top item.
Alyson Widen 8:51pm June 18, 2012)

Beth - The gentleman that answers that ad is sure to spend a warm winter.
Are there people who are allergic to wool? I suppose it's possible. He
better have a sense of humor. Never disappoint a women with two pointy
needles in her hand!

Hope you give Casanova Code a try. It's a different fun way to occupy
those nimble hands of yours.
Donna Macmeans 9:15pm June 18, 2012)

Hi Rita - Yes - he most certainly should be kind. Sad to say, it seems like a
genuinely kind man is a rare treasure - at least among the available ones..
Must be the times that drive the kindness instinct out of them.

Hope you give Casanova Code a read. I think you'll fall in love with my
Donna Macmeans 9:20pm June 18, 2012)

I would say "Strong, independent woman looking for strong, independent man". I would want it all because I already have it all!
Jennifer Beyer 9:23pm June 18, 2012)

Michelle - If he likes movies, he must be a contemporary chap. My story is
before the invention of the motion picture. I do so love sitting in the dark
with my dh, munching away on popcorn - I don't even care if the movie is
great (which is good as sometimes they aren't). Yeah - my guy would
have to love movies as well.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you give Casanova Code a read.
Donna Macmeans 9:23pm June 18, 2012)

LOL ALyson - At first I thought you meant the "advertised for " man must be
crafty - as in handy around the house to fix things. Have to say, that's a
talent I sure could appreciate (grin). Thanks for the nod to the premise. I
love this book and hope you give it a try. Fingers crossed that you love it
Donna Macmeans 9:26pm June 18, 2012)

Jennifer - You're a lucky woman to have it all. And if you're in that position,
I certainly wouldn't blame you for insisting on nothing less than the same.
You go, girl!

But I hope you take a moment to give a read to Casanova Code along the
way (grin). Thanks for stopping by.
Donna Macmeans 9:28pm June 18, 2012)

One hopeless Romantic - Looking for someone to share the little things in life that matter with - walks on the beach, sunsets, sitting in the sun, laughter, sharing our joys, along with sorrows. Must be intelligent, love to eat - but not overdo, enjoys quiet moments as well, and loves music of different genres. I'm anxious to read your book, because I love the era that you've written about. Thank you for the fun question today!!
Peggy Roberson 9:41pm June 18, 2012)

Wanted: A man physically fit, with a sense of humor and must have a JOB.
I had a tee shirt that said " When God created man ,SHE was only kidding."
Deb Pelletier 9:42pm June 18, 2012)

Casanova Code sounds great. I am amazed at the number of people who now meet strangers via the internet. In the past most met at school, church, various dances and such.
Gladys Paradowski 9:43pm June 18, 2012)

Wanted: mature man with sense of humor, sense of adventure,
sense of self; hard worker, likes to have fun; enjoys both
staying home and travel
Diane Sallans 9:53pm June 18, 2012)

Peggy - Love your ad! It's so very romantic, I can almost hear the crashing

Hope you give Casanova Code a try. It really is a fun and sexy read.
Donna Macmeans 9:55pm June 18, 2012)

LOL Deb. I'm so with you about the "must have a job." That's so important
on so many levels.

Thanks for stopping by - hope you give Casanova Code a try!
Donna Macmeans 9:57pm June 18, 2012)

Gladys -- I'm amazed too, but I have a number of friends who have
experienced success using Match.com or something similar. I know the
personal ads gained in popularity when the Industrial Revolution brought
more and more people into the cities looking for work - and away from their
rural based families. Still, I hope you give Casanova Code a try. Sounds
like you can appreciate my heroines suspicions about the Casanova hero
advertising for a mate.

Hey all - My internet has been out all day (grrr...) so I'm sitting at a
McDonalds using their broadband - but it's 10:00 here so I'm heading back
to my internet-less home. Keep on leaving comments. Fresh Fiction will
keep tallying them all. I'll see if I can drop back in tomorrow night (I'm at a
CPA seminar all day tomorrow) to answer your comments.

Hope you all have a pleasant night - sweet dreams!

Mine would say..
Wanted A Man not a boy. Please answer this question before answering this ad. Are you confident enough to take charge when necessary but also intelligent enough to know when you need back-up? If you are seeking a strong, smart, independent woman who loves to cook, play, read and cuddle please reply.
How is that?
Patti Paonessa 11:50am June 19, 2012)
