Rand's transformation into a Vampire has ensured his and Drakeβs survival, despite bounty hunters bent on their destruction, but now Drake has two new problems. Not only has he lost his own source of nourishment, but now he also has a hungry fledgling Vampire on his hands. They must find a new crewmate who can pilot the ship when they both succumb to the daily torpor cycle that leaves them helpless and vulnerable. Theyβre also in need of a blood donor. But what pilot would be desperate enough to take such a job?
An unexpected volunteer comes to their rescue. Rand is shocked by Drakeβs attitude. The older Vampire obviously holds this Human in the highest respect, but Randβs not nearly as impressed by this pilotβs credentials as Drake seems to be. Ferda Wallace may be a hero to Vampires everywhere -- at least those old enough to remember things that happened long before Rand was born -- but Randβs got a few reservations. Not only is Ferda a Veteran Pilot with an agenda of her own, but sheβs a woman! Even if this Veteranβs experienced enough to know moves Randβs never imagined, Randβs just not into women -- is he? Thereβs only one thing that might change his mind -- besides starvation. And thatβs sharing this feast -- err, woman -- with Drake!
