Rand's transformation into a Vampire has ensured his and Drakeโs survival, despite bounty hunters bent on their destruction, but now Drake has two new problems. Not only has he lost his own source of nourishment, but now he also has a hungry fledgling Vampire on his hands. They must find a new crewmate who can pilot the ship when they both succumb to the daily torpor cycle that leaves them helpless and vulnerable. Theyโre also in need of a blood donor. But what pilot would be desperate enough to take such a job?
An unexpected volunteer comes to their rescue. Rand is shocked by Drakeโs attitude. The older Vampire obviously holds this Human in the highest respect, but Randโs not nearly as impressed by this pilotโs credentials as Drake seems to be. Ferda Wallace may be a hero to Vampires everywhere -- at least those old enough to remember things that happened long before Rand was born -- but Randโs got a few reservations. Not only is Ferda a Veteran Pilot with an agenda of her own, but sheโs a woman! Even if this Veteranโs experienced enough to know moves Randโs never imagined, Randโs just not into women -- is he? Thereโs only one thing that might change his mind -- besides starvation. And thatโs sharing this feast -- err, woman -- with Drake!
