Angelina Radcliffe is the high-spirited young descendant of the Radcliffes of Radcliffe Manor. Sir Joshua Reynolds himself painted the portrait of her slender, chestnut-haired ancestress and namesake, Lady Angelina Radcliffe. But times have long since moved on. The manor is a memory and Angelina lives in a modest house in Clapham, in dull suburban London, with an aunt who insists that they maintain the pretense of a long gone status and not mingle with the “riff-raff,” whose company Angelina enjoys. “Though we may have come down in the world, we are still Radcliffes,” her aunt asserts, “even if we do seem to have dropped out of our world, we need not associate with any other.”
Things suddenly change when their young maid, bashful Juliette Rowe, inherits a great deal of money. Angelina hatches a plan to use Juliette’s wealth to create a new lifestyle for the two girls. They plunge headlong into a swirling world of London nightlife and nightclubs where rosy-shaded electric faux candles set a bawdy tone. They trade their boring suburban attire for the latest styles. They hobnob with the fashionable elite, and attract the attention of men such as that unscrupulous blue-eyed pirate with the black mustache, Mr. Charles Walsh, the “Honourable Charlie.” Try as she might, Angelina cannot get him out of her mind.
