Dr. Richmond Dougherty, a successful pediatric surgeon, wasn't supposed to die the way he did. Addison, his second wife who detested him, was supposed to kill him, but someone else beat her to it. It matters not that they were married only 97 days, which Addison considered 97 days too long, she immediately became a suspect and from there she became a victim and a lot more in between. Who could have wanted Richmond dead more than she did and why?
Addison is a fascinating protagonist. Cleverly told, the author reveals Addison's thoughts before she speaks and this is what makes the narrative engrossing. Early on readers learn that Richmond did something horrific decades ago and Addison knows the particulars. Her mission was to expose him, ruin him and then end him. She is not a woman to underestimate. After all, I know of no other characters who considered installing a trap door in front of their front door so that she could get rid of all the pesky people (like Richmond's first wife and their children) who kept darkening her door. Readers can forgive that she blackmailed Richmond into marrying her as underneath all the plotting and scheming, she has a vulnerable and compassionate side. Sort of.
WHAT THE WIFE KNEW, a novel by Darby Kane is a uniquely plotted domestic thriller. There are enough twists and turns and unsavory characters with secrets to keep readers engrossed from start to finish. The dialogue is witty and often outright hysterical. This book is a pleasure to read. Highly recommended.
