PASSIONS IN DEATH is the 59th (yes, you read that right) book in the In Death series written by Nora Roberts as J.D. Robb. Set in future New York City, the books follow Homicide Lt. Eve Dallas as she seeks justice for every victim by finding their killer. Each plot starts not long after the last one ends. This one is set in August of 2061. For those of you who haven’t read this series yet, what are you waiting for? Two new books are written a year. I recommend starting with the first book, Naked In Death, and working your way through them all to get the most out of the series with complete backstory and emotional growth of each of the main characters as well as getting the when and how the secondary characters meet and become entwined in Lt. Dallas' world
PASSIONS IN DEATH starts with a bride being strangled at her bachelorette party in the back room of a sex club, the Down and Dirty. Coincidentally, Eve was attacked in the same room during her bachelorette party the night before her wedding to Roarke. Since Eve is friends with the owner, Wilson Buckley a.k.a. Crack, she is asked to respond to the scene. Eve uses her skills, intuition, and compassion to piece together the underlying clues from the victim and murderer to determine who in the close circle of friends wanted this talented artist dead just days before her wedding. This plot stays tight with the core group of secondary characters Roarke, partner Det. Peabody, McNab, Medical Examiner Dr. Morris, and Psychiatrist Dr. Mira.
Throughout the series, Eve struggles to understand the rules of close relationships after her abusive childhood and upbringing in the foster care system. With each book, the reader can see her transformation from a sarcastic loner to the center of an ever-growing tribe of close friends and partners.
PASSIONS IN DEATH is another fantastic addition to a fabulous series with well-written characters you love to read and revisit in every book. I did guess who was the killer pretty early on but even that didn’t ruin the journey. Can’t wait for the next one!
